First Annual Edgecumbe Biathlon

On April 3rd, thirty-five students competed in the first Edgecumbe Biathlon.  The race would not have been possible without the help of an additional twenty wonderful student volunteers!  Students volunteered to help with timing, photographing, course marking and cheering.

The route consisted of a 1.5 mile run through Totem Park, a 6 mile bike from Totem Park to Whale Park, and then another 1.5 mile run from Totem Park back to Mt. Edgecumbe High School.  There were a total of thirteen students completing the entire biathlon by themselves, while another 22 people competed in the biathlon as a team, with one student running and the other student biking.   Students fought against a strong headwind on the bike course, but all finished the race successfully despite adverse conditions.

There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm on race day, which led to a great racing atmosphere.  Students were well prepared for the race, and many had been training for weeks in preparation for the big day.  An awards ceremony followed the race to congratulate the finishers.  Medals were given out to the top three finishers in all race categories. Edgecumbe gear and many other door prized were given to the winners of the race categories.  Other fun festivities included a beautiful cake made by the cafeteria staff, pre-race spaghetti dinner and piñatas!

Teddy Payenna (Nome) was the overall solo male winner and Scarlett Beaver (Kotz) was the overall solo female finisher.  Congratulations to all participants!  A big thank you to the head organizer of the race, Emily Routon!
