– The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves are the 2011 3A Region V champs. Travante Williams
scored 26 to lead the Braves over crosstown rival Sitka High at Juneau-Douglas High School Friday night as MEHS
captured its first Southeast title since 2005.
The Braves improved to 20-3 overall on the season, and remained undefeated against 3A schools with a 72-57 win over SHS.
Mt. Edgecumbe led 18-14 after the first quarter, weathering a hot-shooting start for the Sitka Wolves. The game slowed down considerably in the second quarter and Sitka struggled to score for much of the frame. Mt. Edgecumbe led 27-19 late in the quarter before the Wolves mounted a 5-0 run, capped by a long three by Cole Venneberg at the buzzer.
After the half, Sitka scored five straight points to tie the score 27-27, with Micahel Matz nailing a three that evened the game. The game went back-and-forth in the early party of the third. Savion Waters and Luke Clayton traded threes, but with the game even at 32-32, Edgecumbe reeled off 5 straight points to go up 39-32. Sean Melovidov had a bucket during that run, and Savion Waters capped it with a steal and dish to Williams, who finished in the lane. The Braves continued to put their foot on the gas pedal and pushed their lead to 10 at the end of the third on a steal and finish by Williams that capped a 4-0 run. Edgecumbe scored 26 points in the quarter.
Leading 53-43 after three, Mt. Edgecumbe pulled away late. Zach Ivanoff, a four-year senior, had 14 for MEHS, Waters added 12 and Dominique Hall had 9.
Venneberg had a team-high 13 for SHS, Devan Romine added 12 and Luke Clayton scored 10. Mik Potrzuski battled some foul trouble in the closely-called game and ended up 9.
The next stop for the Braves is Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.
