Proposal before the State Board of Education

There is a proposal before the State Board of Education for the June 9-10 meeting regarding the changing of the MEHS Graduation Requirements Current | Proposed.

The core of the Graduation Requirement change centers on the following:

Changing from:

4 credits - Social Studies

3 credits - Science

3 credits – Math (including Geometry)

Changing to:

3 credits - Social Studies

3 credits - Science

3 credits – Math (including Geometry)

1 credit of a Social Studies or advanced Science or Math beyond the required

Rationale:  The reason for the change in the MEHS Graduation Requirements was to give better flexibility for students to meet either of the two tracks of the Alaska Performance Scholarship Program (Math/Science and Social Studies). It also allows for more student choice in their course of study as well as opening up the constraints placed on a schedule due to required courses.  The change in the MEHS Graduation Requirements went through the following process and timeline.

There has been some question as to how this change would look – especially for Social Studies.  In order to see what the change might look like, click here.  If adopted, this change would happen for the 2012-2013 school year.
