Medfords of Western North Carolina

The common misconception is that Jonas and Israel MEDFORD of Haywood and McDowell Counties are the son of James MEDFORD and grandson of Henry MEDFORD of Martin County. This theory has been printed, but there is NO EVIDENCE to substantiate these claims.  Israel and Jonas do not appear in the wills of James or Henry and no documention has been found that links them to James.

You will notice that he married Lydia MASSEY in Union Co., SC (Spartanburg) where so many other Medford's have been found.  In fact, there is an older Jonas MEDFORD that joined the American forces in Spartanburg before becoming a Loyalist in Georgia.

Jonas' father-in-law was John MASSEY and his mother-in-law was Lydia nee SANDLIN who had prior lived in Union Dist./Co., S.C.  Jonas appears in the 1810 census Haywood Co., N.C. two HH's from John MASSEY. The 1820 census Haywood Co., per Ann Broadbent, Jonas MEDFORD was not enumerated but because of the two HH from John MASSEY she believes this census Jonah MIDLETON is actually Jonas MEDFORD. Ann was using a census compilation trans. by Betsy Farlow, pub. by the Haywood Co. Genealogical Society.

Petitions to the General Assembly of Tennessee
"Ansearchin" News

Affadavit of Jonas MEDFORD of Jackson County that sometime in May 1807 William THOMPSON of Jackson County requested MEDFORD to "draw some instrument of writing" to prevent his wife living in Virginia from obtaining his property.  Dated 20 September 1807.  Subscribing Justice B. HOUSTON?, Justice peace for Knox County.
(4 pages)    I assume to be the number of pages in the issue that contained the citation ?

This tells us:   1.) Jonas MEDFORD was literate  2.) This is the same William THOMPSON of the Knox Co., Tn. citation that names James MEDFORD.  Thanks to Jim Willis of the Tn. Genealogical Society for supplying this transcription that was requested by Temple Simmons after a snippet was discovered on Google Books by Jonathan Medford.

Temple Simmons suggest someone get an actual copy of this deed in the event the name is actually JONAS.  This William MASSEY (later in Haywood Co., N.C.) is likely his father-in-law.

I am putting the following record here for a lack of a better place right now.  I also want to illustrate lesser known Medford ancestor possibilities that were in the Spartanburg, SC area.
