8th Grade

Universal Screeners Used: 
  • NWEA-Map Online Assessment in Reading.
    • Decision Rule: If a child scores below the 25 percentile in reading (8th grade fall = 211 or 8th grade spring = 213), the child may be recommended for further testing.
  • WKCE Assessment in Reading
    • Decision Rule: If a child receives a Basic or Minimal score, the child may be recommended for further testing.
Diagnostic Tests Used:
  • AIMS Web RCBM (fluency) and AIMS Web MAZE (comprehension) will be administered to all students who are being considered for reading intervention.
  • GORT-4 for rate, accuracy and comprehension will be administered to students who are being considered for reading intervention.
  • CTOPP will be administered to all students who are being considered for the Fast ForWord program.
  • WJ III - Five subtests of the Woodcock Johnson reading test will be adminstered to students who are  being considered for reading intervention.  The subtests used are: comprehension, word attack, letter word identification, spelling of sounds, and fluency.
  • Upon entering each program, each student will be assessed with the program specific assessment for proper placement.

                      If a student scores... 
                      • low rate, high accuracy on the GORT-4
                      ...the student may be placed into Reading Assistant in addition to a portion of the regular classroom instruction during the Accelerated Reader time.
                       
                      If desired results are not met, this time can be increased.
                       
                      If the student scores...
                      • scores at or above the 30th percentile on the NWEA reading test, or
                      • makes their AIMS web goal
                      • or finishes all the readings in the reading asst. program.

                      ...the student may be exited from Reading Assistant.

                      If a student scores...
                      • low rate, low accuracy on the GORT-4
                      and
                      • between the 20th and 35th percentile rank on his/her NWEA reading test.

                      ...the student may be placed in Corrective Reading as his/her primary reading class. 

                      (Decoding and Comprehension)
                      If the student scores...
                      • at or above the 30th percentile on the NWEA reading test
                      or
                       
                       
                      ...the student will be exited from Corrective Reading
                       If a student scores...
                      • main concern is processing, and
                      • he/she scores between the 25th and 30th percentile rank on the AIMS Web RCBM or MAZE, and
                      • below the 25th percentile on phonological awareness or phonological memory on the CTOPP
                      • or -- The student is enrolled in Corrective Reding / Reading Mastery

                      ...the student may be placed in Fast ForWord in addition to his/her regular classroom instruction.

                      Fast ForWord If the student scores...
                      • at or above the 30th percentile on the NWEA reading test
                      or
                       
                      ...the student will be exited from Fast ForWord.

                       If a student’s...

                      • main concern is decoding, and
                      • he/she scores below 20th percentile rank on NWEA overall reading score, and
                      • ideally has an IQ above 80, and
                      • he/she scores below 20th percentile rank on the WJ III subtests, and
                      • ideally has higher scores on comprehension than decoding scores, and

                      ....then the student may be placed in Wilson in addition to his/her regular classroom instruction.

                      Wilson

                      If the student 

                      achieves 3 of the 4 criteria listed below, the student may be exited from the Wilson reading program prior to completing step 9.  If the student does not meet the exit criteria the student will remain in Wilson reading at least through step 9. 

                      • Within grade level expectations of the NWEA  test (higher than 45th percentile)
                      • Proficient on their current grade level state WKCE test.
                      • In the average range on the WJ III subtests
                      • Makes their AIMS web goal
                      • Special education student's IEP team will determine on which Wilson Level step the student will need to achieve.
                         If a student scores...
                        • below the 25th percentile rank on the AIMS MAZE comprehension test

                        and

                        • below the 25th percentile rank in comprehension on the GORT-4

                        ...then the student may be placed in Achieve 3000 for 20-30 minutes per day 3 to 4 times per week. 

                        Achieve 3000  If the student scores...
                        • at or above the 30th percentile on the NWEA reading test
                        or
                         
                        ...the student will be exited from Achieve 3000.
                         If a student scores...
                        • below an 80 on the IQ test
                        and
                        • below the 25th percentile rank on the NWEA test for reading

                        ...then the student may be placed in Edmark for sight word recognition.

                        Edmark  If the student scores...
                        • at or above the 30th percentile on the NWEA reading test
                        or
                         
                        ...the student will be exited from Edmark.
                        If a student exits out of Corrective Reading/Decoding Strand, students will enter Read 180 as an intermediate step between Corrective Reading and Regular Universal Reading.
                         
                        If students are in Universal Reading, and scores minimal and/or basic multiple years in a row on the WKCE state tests 
                         
                        and/or
                         
                        Scores below the 30% percentile on NWEA reading tests
                         
                        ....then the student may be placed into Read 180.
                        Read 180
                        If the student achieves 3 of the 4 criteria listed below, the student will be exited from the READ 180 program and be placed in grade level communication arts.
                         
                        • If a students receives a grade level SRI (Scholastic Reading Index) Lexile on both of their most recent two attempts.
                        • If a student scores at or above the 45th percentile on the  NWEA reading test on both of their most recent two attempts.
                         
                        ...then students will be exited to Universal Reading Instruction.
