The Integration of Nutrition into Extension and Advisory Services:
A synthesis of experiences, lessons and recommendations

GFRAS and the World Bank’s Secure Nutrition Knowledge Platform supported a research project to examine the integration and linkages of nutrition within extension and advisory services (EAS) and workers in Africa, South Asia, and the Americas. The major purpose of this work was to analyze and document the past, current and future EAS and the role that nutrition activities play within their portfolio. Through performing an extensive literature review, analyzing survey responses, and conducting interviews with actors from worldwide development organizations, governmental agencies, educational and research institutions, and the private sector, this report summarizes the current state of knowledge on the role of nutrition in extension and advisory services. See the report here.

The USAID Bureaus of Global Health and Food Security, in collaboration with the Strengthening Partnerships, Results and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING) project, hosted the fourth Agriculture and Nutrition Global Learning and Evidence Exchange (AgN-GLEE) on Tuesday June 18, 2013. This day-long event focused on a key priority in the U.S. Government’s international development and investment strategy: the integration of agriculture and nutrition strategies and activities. Key concepts and outcomes from the three Regional AgN-GLEE workshops conducted in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean will also be shared. Malnutrition remains one of the major obstacles to human well-being and economic prosperity in developing countries.1 There are strong normative and instrumental reasons related to human and economic development to address the burden of malnutrition as an issue of public concern. This calls for governments to prioritize policies and actions and allocate substantial investments in efforts to address the needs of their malnourished populations. Governments have the responsibility to establish function-ing institutions and infrastructure enabling the poor to achieve nutrition security and to provide services for treatment and prevention of malnutrition and related diseases.
