Middle School Music

I miss making music with you!

Want a lesson or just need to chat? Email me and we'll find a time this week!

1) LISTEN AND REFLECT: Below is a video of singer/songwriter Pete Seeger performing We Shall Overcome in 1967. How have things changed since this recording more than 50 years ago? How have they stayed the same? What can YOU do to make the world a more peaceful place?

2) READ the following article about history behind We Shall Overcome.

3) Many of you may remember when we studied the song Follow the Drinking Gourd in 4th grade music class. (It's linked above if you need a refresher.) What are some similarities/differences you hear when comparing these two songs?

4) Explore and play high school pep band songs! Focus on Bohemian Rhapsody this week, then email me a short video of you playing! https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8yk6hNEbrjQUC1nMFVja3RVUlE

5) Challenge your sight reading skills! https://www.sightreadingfactory.com/

6) Figure out the Solfege (Do, Re, Me) for Baby Shark, just because it's fun! Try playing it on your instrument and/or singing it with hand signs (chart is below).

7) Keep making music!

Band members should be practicing:

  • All major scales

  • Percussionists: Rudiments: 5 and 7 stroke roll, paradiddle, flam, flam tap, drag/ruff, double stroke roll

  • Any music you have in your folder and/or search online for fun pop songs that we never have the time to play around on!

Chorus members should be practicing:

  • Solfege and hand signs

  • "Albert"- practice with a friend singing in a round!

  • "Waving Through a Window" - from Dear Evan Hansen

  • "Know Who You Are"- by Opetaia Foa'i and Lin-Manuel Miranda
