2013 Spring Plays

We've got wit at MDIHS! Our second spring play offering is the Pulitzer Prize-winning meditation on life, death, and the metaphysical poetry of John Donne, Wit. This play, directed by Chris Dougherty, which will satisfy biologists, medicos and English majors alike, will be performed at MDIHS on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, May 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and  $6 for students and seniors and will be available for purchase at the door. A difficult play about a difficult subject that, as Dr. Bearing says, you'll be "surprised to find...contains elements of humor."

MDI Drama to Present Theater Classic Arsenic and Old Lace

Just a pinch of cyanide makes the elderberry wine go down.

Two little old ladies – known for their charitable works - use that as well as strychnine and arsenic to send little old men into the next life in what they consider a final act of charity. Meanwhile, their nutty nephew, Teddy, who thinks he’s really Teddy Roosevelt, digs graves for the deceased all the while thinking he’s digging the Panama Canal.

The premise is part of the hugely popular play Arsenic and Old Lace, directed by Frank Bachman, to be presented by MDI Drama with performances scheduled Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 pm the Higgins-Demas Theater at MDIHS. Tickets are $8 for adults and  $6 for students and seniors and will be available for purchase at the door.

The play centers on the newlywed Mortimer, who with new bride and childhood sweetheart, Elaine, visits the little old ladies, Abby and Martha Brewster, who raised Mortimer. Shortly after, Mortimer’s murderous brother, Jonathan, arrives and tries passing off his victim as one of his aunts’ “charity efforts.” In the meantime, Jonathan wants to kill Mortimer who tries getting Jonathan arrested. Mortimer hopes to pass the blame of his aunts’ charity on to insane Teddy whom Mortimer wants locked up in a mental institution.

“Insanity runs in my family; mine practically gallops!” an exasperated Mortimer says in the midst of this.

To find out what happens, you’ll have to see the play.
