A combination library and technology lab, the McClure Learning Commons is a learning, research, and project space where teachers and students come to learn, discover, and explore their curiosity. In the learning commons, you can find new books to read widely and expand your horizons, challenge yourself with a makerspace activity, and learn using books and technology.

How do I contact the learning commons?
The best way to reach us is via email or call the library at 469-302-9447. You can also use this form to share an idea or book suggestion.
How many books can I check out?
Kindergarten students = one book to begin, two books after memorizing your ID number, three books soon after
1st-5th graders = three books, four books for students who participate a library reading challenge program
Parents = ten items for two weeks
Teachers = unlimited items for one month
When there is a special assignment in class, students may check out extra items. Books can and should go home to read each night.
When are library books due?
The computer marks all items overdue that have been checked out for two weeks or longer. If you have an item that is overdue you will get a printed reminder slip. We do not charge fines for overdue items.
Please return books you are finished with promptly since others may be waiting to read them. Students are welcome to keep items longer than two weeks, but be sure to come to the library to renew items so they won’t be marked overdue.
What happens if an item from the library is lost or damaged?
Lost books must be paid for in order to clear student records and borrow another book. Once an item has been deemed missing (don’t forget to look under your bed and in your car first!) students will be asked to pay for lost and damaged items. We accept monetary payments (checks preferred) or you may buy a hardback replacement copy from a bookstore and bring it to the learning commons.
When can I visit the learning commons?
The learning commons is open Monday-Friday from 7:40am – 3:30pm. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to visit anytime after signing in at the office. **Students must be accompanied by an adult after 3:15pm.
The learning commons model operates on a flexible schedule, which means — no more waiting until library day — students come to the learning commons whenever they want or need! Teachers schedule lessons on information literacy skills that connect with what is being taught in the classroom. Small groups, individuals, and classes can all visit the learning commons at the same time, anytime, for reading or research.
What reading programs does the learning commons sponsor?
Special reading encouragement programs are offered throughout the year for all students. Visit us in the learning commons for more information on BEE Books and other programs.
The learning commons also runs a Scholastic Book Fair each year in the fall to get kids excited about reading and raise money for new books and technology purchases at McClure. Please contact Mrs. Hamilton if you would like to volunteer at the book fair. Your help is crucial to our success!
What do students learn in the learning commons?
Research shows that children learn best at the point-of-need. Our learning commons program is an extension of the classroom and information skills are taught within the context of the classroom curriculum. All students participate in research units planned cooperatively with teachers and the MRS to learn research and technology skills at the same time as they learn curriculum-related information.
How can parents get involved?
We are always looking for volunteers! If you are detail-oriented, patient, and flexible we would love your help. Please contact Mrs. Santiago or sign up through PTO if you are interested in being a weekly or bi-weekly shelving volunteer or are able to provide coverage at the circulation desk to allow for library staff lunch breaks.
Did you know parents can check out books too? Stop in to borrow items to enjoy at home and with your student. In addition, the McKinney Public Library offers weekly programs for parents and children to attend.
What should I do if I have a question?
Please ask! Email Mrs. Hamilton or stop by the learning commons to visit us. Comments and ideas are always appreciated.
