A Community Garden Update

posted Jan 22, 2013, 8:37 AM by Michael Bausch
From Katie Gletty-Sjoen, who is trying to get a community garden off the ground in McFarland.   This garden is tentatively planned for the lower part of our vacant lot (close to The Homestead Apartments)... not run by our church, but with the support and cooperation of our church, so good land does not go to waste.  Don't worry - plenty of space will still be available for our play field.   Here's the latest news:

Hello All,

On this, the coldest day of the year, I am sending forth hope for the spring to come!  I am doing my best to banish this frigid gloom with my dreams for a much greener future in the McFarland Community Garden.  I don't know about you guys, but my garden catalogs are already dog-eared, creased, crinkled, noted, and highlighted.  Those are my beacons through these cold and dark winter days...

I am contacting all of you because you have voiced an interest in the community garden project.  There has been much work completed, but much more work to be done!  At this point, I am calling a committee meeting to continue to move forward and build momentum.  I hope that our ideas for this garden will root within our community and continue to grow and grow to feed our Village for years to come.

Things are moving along with the community garden...here are a few updates:

1.  We may use the Friends of McFarland Parks as our umbrella organization...
2.  I am presenting to the Plan Commission Committee Tuesday, January 22nd to discuss the zoning for the garden.  ...
3.  Last Friday, January 18th Steve Hoeft, Joe Mathers (CAC), and a plumber from Trigg's Plumbing met with me at the proposed garden space to review all the possible irrigation options and the approximate costs.  This was a prerequisite set forth by the Public Utilities Committee.  ...

Upcoming meetings:
  • Tuesday, January 22nd:  Plan Commission Meeting for Zoning Regulations
  • Friday, January 25th:  Presentation at The Homestead
  • Monday, January 28th:  McFarland Village Board Meeting--Action Item (may be postponed if zoning issues need to be resolved first)
  • Sunday, February 3rd:  GARDEN COMMITTEE MEETING--3PM
  • Monday, February 4th:  Presentation at McFarland Garden Club
  • Tuesday, February 12th:  Presentation at Skaalen Village
  • Saturday, February 16th:  CAC Grow Together Community Gardening Conference 8:30am to 3pm at Warner Park Community Center (see attached flyer and registration form)

I would like to gather together the committee for the garden.  If you would like to serve on the committee, please attend.  There will be many jobs to do, so if you only have an hour to volunteer or 100 hours to volunteer, please join us.  I was hoping for Sunday, February 3rd at 3pm.  Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you can make it to this meeting.  If this will not work for you, perhaps we can arrange an alternate day/time.  Hopefully, we can arrange for some free childcare for the meeting too (if you have kids who are middle school or high school age that would like to volunteer for childcare, please have them contact me: katiegs@gmail.com).

Warmest Wishes to All of You!
