Mentoring Program

In Fall 2018, Angela Kraft and Hannah Biegel worked with the associate head of the math department, Dave Glickenstein, to start a mentoring program for first and second year students in the math, applied math, and statistics programs. The goal of this mentoring program is to connect first and second year graduate students with students further along in the program, build students' social capital within the department, and provide students with advice from other graduate students on how to succeed in the programs.

Benefits of the program:

    • Connect with students further along in the program

    • Listen to their experiences

    • Develop social capital within the department

    • Get tips from graduate students on how to succeed in your program

    • Have a contact to ask questions about classes, qualifying exams, teaching, choosing an advisor, etc.

The mentoring program consists of a combination of one-on-one meetings with a mentor as well as several networking events throughout the semester.
