ABOUT THE COUNSELOR

Welcome to Williamston Primary School!  I look forward to getting to know each of your children. I am a Martin County native and proud to serve students in the county I plan to always call home.

The School Counselor's Role.........

Classroom Guidance: I visit your child's classroom and teach character education lessons.  This allows me to interact and work with ALL of the students.  I serve as one of your child's resource classes during the following times:
First and Fourth Six Weeks:  Kindergarten and First Grade
Second and Fifth Six Weeks: Kindergarten and Second Grade
Third and Sixth Six Weeks:  First and Second Grade

Individual Counseling:  may be needed due to classroom behavior; choosing, getting, and keeping friends; low self-esteem, issues at home, or any other situation bothering the student.  Individual counseling is NOT therapy. It is meant to be brief and solution-focused based in support of the child's educational program. If your child needs long-term therapy can refer you to another agency or individual that can provide long-term therapy.

Small Group Counseling: may be needed for the same reason as individual counseling but with two or three other children to also foster social skills development.  This is an educational group not therapy.  Parental permission must be obtained before a child can participate in group counseling.

Other major roles in the school.......

PST (Problem Solving Team) Chairperson:  Students with behavioral or academic challenges are presented by his or her teacher to this team to insure everything is being done to help your child.  This team will identify intervention for your child's teacher.  The team may also suggest a referral for psychological testing, speech/language evaluation, or that the child see his or her pediatrician.

504 Coordinator:  Your child could be eligible for a 504 plan if he or she has a major medical condition that impacts a major life activity.  These conditions include but are not limited to food allergies, asthma, and diabetes.  If eligible, a plan is written to formally recognize what is to be done on a daily basis to accommodate the child's needs.  If you have any questions about 504 please contact me at the school at 792-3253.
