Welcome to Mrs. Lotz's Life Science Class!

This website will be your gateway for information including homework, documents, important announcements, useful links, and project updates.
There are a lot of exciting things happening this year, so make sure to check back frequently!

Recent Announcements

  • Here are the five most recent announcements--will generally cover 1-2 weeks, depending on how busy the class is. For older announcements, please click on the "Announcements Archive" link in the navigation bar to the left.
  • Extra Credit Opportunities
    1. NH Fish and game is hosting an event tomorrow, 4/21, in Concord to raise awareness about our local wildlife, game laws, and environmental issues. If students go and take a selfie with at least three animals (or collect pamphlets, if they don't have a means of taking pictures), they will receive extra credit.

    2. "Inside Nature's Giants" is a National Geographic series that documents the dissections of large animals that died of natural causes. We just finished watching and taking notes on the giraffe dissection, which was incredibly interesting! I have offered students the chance to earn extra credit by viewing any of the other episodes that they want and creating an A&P sheet for the organism. This can be turned in at any time during this quarter and can be done multiple times with the different organisms.

I'm adding an extra credit page under "Student Resources" that will have details and links with more information about each of these opportunities.

  • Frog Projects: due by midnight!
Frog projects are due today by midnight. I have graded several that were turned in early--those grades have been added to Aspen.

Students who did not turn in a project by the end of school today have an NHI (not handed in) code in Aspen. This calculates as a zero.

Projects turned in by midnight will be graded without penalty. Projects turned in over vacation will be given a 5 point reduction. Projects turned in after vacation will not be able to earn higher than a C.

  • Changes for Quarter 4!
With Q4 comes a lot of changes. The work is even more independent, there are more formal assignments like reports and presentations, and I treat my classes like 9th graders. All of this is to help with the transition from middle to high school.

One of the biggest changes coming is how I weight my grades. Students were made aware of the coming change during Q2 and I will be sending home letters Friday, but I wanted to put it here also. The new category weights will be Assessments (90%), everything else (10%). This is the model used by all teachers at Memorial High School. Since this is so different from what the students are used to, I want to give them a quarter with that weighting to get them ready for next year. Aspen has been changed to reflect this. If there are any questions, definitely email me.

  • Comparative Anatomy and Physiology Project Information
This week we officially started our comparative A&P project. Over the past few weeks, we have been dissecting leeches, worms, sea stars, and sharks. We also made some observations of a live hedgehog. Coming up is the frog followed by a human body study. The information from all of these studies is going to be used in a final project.

The first stage of the project is to summarize what we know about the specimens we've studied so far. These resource pages are due tomorrow. The next step is to complete an in-depth examination of the frog and fill out resource pages for it.

Keep a look out for more information as this HUGE project rolls forward! ^_^

  • Course Registration for High School
Just a friendly reminder that course registration forms are due to Ms. Libby by the end of the day Wednesday. I sent home some reminders for students whose forms I haven't seen. Make sure you get them turned in so you get the classes you want!
