STEAM Ahead is a school-within-a-school educational program that incorporates a teamed approach to interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Students take part in authentic hands-on learning that challenges them at a variety of levels and encourages 21st century learning skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Courses in STEAM Ahead are unleveled, and students are teamed in classes with a variety of learners. The first two years of STEAM Ahead include core content area courses, plus an exploratory engineering course. In its inaugural year, students have built mechanical hands, hydraulic machines, and efficient mixing blades, all while answering Essential Questions about “The Design Process,” “Control Systems,” and other important themes that run throughout all of their STEAM courses. Students will have the opportunity to take electives as their schedule allows. The final two years of the program are less structured, and students will finish their graduation requirements. Students are highly encouraged to participate in an internship with one of our local community business partners and will have the opportunity to earn college credits for free due to the partnerships and funding that have resulted from this project. All students in the program will have access to one-to-one technology.
