What's Happening in 4th Grade this Trimester

ELA English, Language Arts

This trimester, students will be focusing on:

• Rituals and Routines! We will learn about our teachers, the routines of our day, each other, and ourselves! This will help us be caring and productive learners and members of our classroom community.

• Narrative and Realistic Fiction. We will read and discuss stories about interesting, realistic people places and events. We will use the elements of narrative and realistic fiction to tell our own interesting stories.

Science & Social Studies

Students will be learning:
• How scientists make careful observations using their senses to make inferences and problem solve.

• How forces of nature can change the land and the many landforms found in the United Stated and the world.

• Students will continue to participate in reading text closely to identify author's craft through word choice, text structure, illustrations and other elements. We will also discuss author's purpose, author's message and explore deeper meaning in text. We will share these discoveries through discussion and writing.
• We are currently closely reading 4 texts with a common theme of leadership, and the qualities necessary to be a strong leader.

Mathematics

Unit 1: Place Value and Whole Number Operations
Read, write, compare and represent whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
Add and Subtract whole numbers. Use estimation strategies such as rounding to assess the reasonableness of answers.
Solve multistep word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Unit 2: Parts of a Whole/Fractions
Understand the meaning of fractions (part of a whole).
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
Understand fractions in tenths and hundredths.
Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100.
Compare decimals to the hundredths place.

Junior STEAM

First Lego League Jr.

This year 4th graders will be working with the Wedo Lego robot to build and program models based on scientific topics, such as animals' life and habitat, building structures, weather and more. Students will learn to research to find out more about such topics.
Students will work on these projects once a week for 90 minutes beginning in October.
This year's theme is Aqua Adventures. We will learn about where water comes from, how it gets to our homes, and how to clean and treat our water supply.
