The Manaiakalani Programme was established in 2007 with these specified goals:

  • develop the personal voice of each child
  • develop an authentic audience
  • deliver 21st Century Education to 21st Century Learners
  • raise student achievement outcomes
  • have participants who are confident, connected, actively involved life-long learners
  • develop the employable skill level of its student population

A major focus of the Professional Learning and Development (PLD) team has been to support our learning community of educators, young
people and whanau to gain full Digital Citizenship. This has been simply expressed through the phrase "At home in a digital world". Recent documents from the Ministry of Education refer to this as Digital Fluency.
In 2017, ten years down the track, many of our community do feel at home and our emphasis has moved to
"Effective teaching, accelerated learning".

"Young people today have lots of experience … interacting with new technologies, but a lot less so of creating [or] expressing themselves with
new technologies. It's almost as if they can read but not write.” (Mitch Resnick)
