Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was to plan & write a piece of explanation writing using the T.I.I.C (Title - Introduction - Information - Conclusion) structure. In the first part of the video you see a whole class lesson where I am recapping what we had covered in a previous lesson, and I also introduce the explanation writing plan. The second part of the video shows me working with a group of children as we go over their plans to then start the process of writing using the writing template.

Reflection/Next steps
As this was our second session on explanation writing I found it difficult to make it overly exciting for the children as initially they need to understand the nuts and bolts of explanation writing. However overall the children seemed engaged and I felt this was a successful lesson as each of the children, to varying degrees, were able to demonstrate the T.I.I.C (Title - Introduction - Information - Conclusion) structure, which is a good foundation to build from. Our next steps involve writing an effective introduction and conclusion and also employing more explanation language features such as time connectives. It was a real eye opener watching myself back on video as it highlighted aspects of my teaching that I didn't even know were there. Things like my repeating of instructions (often more than twice) and the overuse of words like awesome etc. This will be something I'll be endeavouring to work on.
