Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to write from the 1st person. I also wanted them to start thinking through design, materials, and outcomes for technology without seeming like they were doing so. The video shows the set up for the writing, and the second paragraph. They kids were asked to brainstorm and then write about what kinds of resources they could find on the island, and how they would use them to build some kind of shelter.

Reflection This was really fun. I was particularly excited by how enthusiastic the boys were for this writing topic, in the video you can see enthusiasm in both the group discussions on the mat, as well as the group session I take at the table. I had intended to spend more time focussing on writing in the first person, but encouraging the kids to write about how they were using resources to build the things they needed to survive ended up becoming more of the focus.
Things to note This was the first of 2 writing sessions over 2 days. |

Walt: Write from the 1st person.
Instructions Use the presentation to think about what you would do in this scenario.
Think outside the box and what it might really be like to be stranded on a deserted island.
You would need to build and create your own technology to survive.
Reading Use the reading to help you think of ideas.
