Kia ora and welcome to my Manaiakalani Google Class OnAir site.
My name is Karen Ferguson and I work at Tamaki College, where I teach Design and Visual Communication to Year 7 through to Year13.
The focus of my enquiry here is my senior classes doing NCEA.
I have 2 senior classes and they are both mixed levels. One has a mix of NCEA Level 2 and 3, and the other has a mix of NCEA Level 1,2 and 3. What I am looking at is supporting those mixed Levels in one classroom to become more self motivated.
If you have any questions about anything that i share on here, please don't hesitate to contact me using the links at the bottom of the page.

 Term 3: Design Analysis
This term the focus will be on analysis of design work. This is the written work that needs to go with the design work that the students complete. I have decided to focus on this for this term as the written element of design work is always where our weakness is in the Design and Visual Communication course.

Year 12 and 13 students are doing a design analysis exercise to prepare them for analysing their own work.

The students are analysing each others work following the same structure as the exercise in the previous lesson.

The students have been doing a daily short analysis exercise all together so they get used to analysis as a normal thing with design

 Term 2: Design Skills
This term our focus is on producing design ideas. We will be looking at the skills needed to draw the designs and how the students apply those skills in their NCEA  projects.
The first three lessons this term show the progression from the students learning a skill, consolidating that skill by making their own rewindable resources then using that skill in their own design ideas.
Year 11, 12 and 13 students are learning how to sketch in 3D using isometric grid paper.

The students are creating their own rewindable digital resources to refer to about the skills they have just covered.

This lesson sees the students using the isometric skills learned in the last two lessons on their own design developments.
A group of 6 Year 12 students teach a class of Year 10 students some rendering skills.
The students are learning how to draw cross sectional views of their design developments and analyse what materials would be used.

Term 1: Settling in to the routines
This term our focus is on settling into the new routines of coming into a multi-level NCEA classroom. We will do this with a combination of Google sites, calendars  and Google Plus and structured, rewindable tasks.

Year 12 and Year13 students come into the class and have two totally seperate things to be getting on with.

Ferguson 2
Year 12 students are on product analysis using SOLO hexagons and Year 13 students are talking about their progress to date.

Ferguson 3
Year 11, 12 and 13 students are all working on Design Elements at the same time so they can appreciate the importance of them across different projects

This highlights a series of sessions with Year 11 students as they complete their first assessment.
