Alateen

Has Your Life Been Affected By Someone Else's Drinking?

Welcome to the “Alateen” home page!

Alateen, for younger family members and friends, is a part of Al-Anon Family Groups. Materials included in this section provide helpful information on starting an Alateen group, serving a group, and meeting ideas for Alateens. Select a topic and start browsing!

Try an Alateen chat meeting

Chat live with other teens! Young people aged 13 to 18 who have been affected by someone else’s drinking are invited to share experience, strength and hope with other teens from across the U.S. and Canada.

Registration is required. Just follow the simple directions on the registration page. You will be asked to “click back” from an e-mail during the registration process.

Chat meetings are moderated, and teens can only chat when the adult Alateen Group Sponsors are present. At this time, you can only access the chat meetings on a computer (rather than on mobile devices).

The meeting schedule is posted on the registration page.

    Alateen Chat Safety

The Alateen chat rooms are administered by the Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., and hosted by Areas (states/provinces) in our U.S./Canada structure. The meetings are the only on-line meetings eligible to use the Alateen name. Safety features include:

    • Teens aged 13 to 18 can register to attend the Alateen chat meetings.
    • Alateen registration is required, with a valid e-mail address.
    • Once registered, teens can use their screen name and password to access meetings in all of the Alateen chat rooms.
    • Each chat room is hosted by one of the Areas (state/province), and the chat meetings’ Alateen Group Sponsors are certified Al-Anon Members Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS) from that Area.
    • Two Alateen Group Sponsors are present for each meeting.
    • The Alateen sharings are screened by the Alateen Group Sponsors.  This happens very quickly, with no delay; the Sponsors make sure that no personal information or inappropriate language is used in the room.
    • Adult Al-Anon members should contact their Area Alateen Coordinator for information on their Area’s participation in the Alateen chat meetings.

For more information on the Alateen Chat Meetings, contact Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. Group Services Department, wso@al-anon.org.

     Here’s some important information:

Like the Al-Anon WSO Facebook page, Alateen WSO is a source of information about Alateen, not a place for members to share with each other. It is intended to deliver an Alateen message to the many young people who are on Facebook. It is not a place for members to share their program with each other and with others, which would violate our Tradition of anonymity.

Our Alateen WSO Facebook page states:

This Facebook page provides information for anyone interested in the effects of alcoholism on the younger relatives and friends of problem drinkers. Membership in Alateen is neither assumed nor implied for any visitors to this site.

On Facebook, look for Alateen WSO. You will notice that there is not a “Friend” option on the page— even though building up a large bank of friends is a big part of how Facebook usually works.  Again, WSO is sharing information that we hope you will pass on to others, but remember that Tradition Eleven asks members to maintain personal anonymity in the public media, such as on your Facebook page.

If you want to “follow” the posts of Alateen WSO, simply click “Like” to like the page.   However, remember that indicating on your Facebook page that you “like” Alateen could also be understood as a public statement that you are a member. If you have clicked on the “Like” option, you can change it!

Please share this information within Al-Anon and Alateen!

All members are invited to “carry the message” of Alateen recovery!
