Chicago Youth Service Day (CYSD) is an exciting annual opportunity for young people across the City to join together for a day of service and peace. In 2013, CYSD will take place on Saturday, May 4th.
Service takes many forms during the day with a special emphasis on peace-making in our communities. During the first part of the day, students will take part in interactive projects with seniors, children and peers, as well as restore natural areas, collaborate with community organizations and raise awareness for issues important to their community.
After spending the morning executing service projects, students gather for a citywide peace rally, bringing together 2,000 young people from across the City. The peace rally includes fun and engaging activities for youth and families, live entertainment and a call to peaceful, non-violent action in Chicago.
To find out more about Chicago Youth Service Day and how you can help students make a difference in Chicago, contact the CYSD team at email@example.com.

EMAIL FROM THE SALVATION ARMY:
We serve breakfast to families of moms who are at least 7 months pregnant or who have a child under 1 year old. After breakfast the men go to a class as do the children from 4 and up. Then the moms shop for free diapers, baby wipes, used baby clothes and toys, etc.
We need volunteers to help serve breakfast, or maybe carry cereal bowls to the tables or watch babies in carriers while mom helps herself to breakfast.
Volunteers could also help in the kitchen by cutting oranges into wedges and bananas into pieces. Serving tables need to be set up. After breakfast the kitchen must be cleaned.
We need volunteers to watch toddlers (under adult supervision) and sing songs with them or play with blocks and other toys.
Volunteers are always needed to help moms shop for free items. Mom is often holding the baby and the volunteer holds the shopping bag as mom selects items. Sometimes volunteers assist mom get the items out to the car. (We occasionally have used strollers and swings).
Volunteers could help on Friday night before the Saturday distribution and set up the temporary store. It involves moving large bins of clothing and laying items on tables by gender and size. Cases of diapers and baby wipes must also be moved.
The reverse of Friday night is also an occasion for volunteers. The store must be torn down and all items cleared. The eating area must be vacuumed and ready for others to use.
We start in the kitchen at 7 a.m. We are often done by 11 and out of the building.
