DECA National Competition

January 2011
Maine East - Business Education - Mr. Dale Laskey
Foundation Award: $1000

The Maine East chapter of DECA is preparing for the annual International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida which will be held from April 30 to May 3, 2011. Maine East DECA members are serious and dedicated business students who have worked extremely hard to prepare for local, area, state and national competitions. Each DECA competition involves students working in three primary areas:
  1. Role-Play preparation where members are given real-world business problems that they have to analyze, solve and then communicate creative solutions to adult judges.
  2. Students take a comprehensive economics test to measure their understanding of key business, economics, and applied mathematics concepts learned in their business classes.
  3. Written Event preparation where students create real-world, 30 page business plans in categories such as:
  • International Business
  • Internet Marketing
  • Learn & Earn (School Store operations)
  • Community Service

Maine East DECA students have a definite advantage as they move forward in their education. In addition to training our members how to solve real-world business and economic problems, we are able to focus on both oral and written communications. As a result of their commitment to Maine East DECA, members have a better understanding of what it takes to be successful. Their level of literacy is unparalleled, and their polished communication and networking skills will prove to be some of the most important skills that are necessary going into the future.

Since 1946 DECA has filled the role of the premier student organization preparing high school and college students for careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Through DECAs program of activities, and partnerships with business and industry, students develop academic, leadership, communication, human relations, employability and civic responsibility skills. DECA’s activities and partnerships focus on local, state, national and international programs designed to encourage career exploration and recognize student achievement. DECA is co-curricular and designed as an integral part of the classroom instructional program at Maine East. The goals of DECA are:

  • to develop leadership characteristics
  • to develop self-confidence and self-acceptance
  • to develop a greater understanding of our free, competitive enterprise system
  • to further develop occupational competencies
