Gifted Lyceum

March 2010
Maine East - Ms. Judy Tyler
Foundation Award - $1500

This summer (2011) the Gifted Lyceum will be traveling to Cedar Rapids, Iowa through the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program from July 22 - July 28th as part of the curricular requirements of the Leadership for Life course. We are taking 24 students again this summer. The students will be spending a week rebuilding homes after the massive flooding from the late spring of 2008. The victims of this flood have been rebuilding for the past year after the extensive cleanup of two years ago, which we were a part of. Last summer we were asked by an organization called Hope Community Development Association to work with them again this summer. They were extremely impressed with the work ethic and knowledge of our crews. Our students will be attending three dry wall classes prior to the trip to maximize their productivity at the work sites. These relief trips have been very successful and powerful learning experiences for the students of Maine East and we are extremely grateful for the Foundation’s generous gifts over the past three years.

We are asking the students to cover the Camp expenses and spending money. The Lyceum Budget will cover gas for the vans. All of the adult volunteers, Maine East Staff members, (Judy Tyler, Marty Murphy, Bryan Kett), a former Maine East teacher Patrick Baldwin and two parents (Mr. Radanovic and Mr. Simonsen) are donating not only their time but also the cost to attend the camp.
