Congratulations:

***Congratulations to the Girls Swim/Dive team for their performances on Friday and Saturday. Friday night they won their CSL Conference Dual at Glenbrook South 105 to 80. On Saturday they had a strong performance finishing 3rd at the Hersey Jamboree. New pool records were set by Riley Bond in diving and Annika Wagner in the 200 IM.

***Congratulations the boys cross country team on their 2nd place finish at the Peoria Invite on Saturday.

***We'd like to announce that Vol. 54 of the EYRIE, Maine South's Yearbook, recently won a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This is the first time in Maine South history that our yearbook has won this prestigious award. Join me in congratulating our hardworking yearbook staff.

***Congratulations again on a great Homecoming week! A special shout-out to all of the clubs and classes that participated in our decorating and dress-ups days.

This Tuesday, October 2nd, the Mock Trial team has a fundraiser at the Uptown Chipotle from 4-8pm to help raise funds for their San Francisco trip later this month. Bring a picture of the flyer or mention Maine South Mock Trial to make sure 33% of the proceeds will go to the Mock Trial team.

Looking for a way to participate in the V-Show without an audition???  Join Footlighters, the group that opens and closes the Show. No experience required.  Our first rehearsal is Today, Tuesday, October 2 at 3:30 in choir room PA 105. Next one, this Thursday. Rehearsals are brief and short.  Questions? Jostens will be here for class ring orders on Wednesday during lunch hours in the cafeteria.  Design yours online, print off the form or save it to your phone, and turn it in at the Jostens table on Wednesday during your lunch hours.

All are welcome to the first Harry Potter Club of the school year! Join us on Wednesday at 7:20am in room C127.

Medical Careers Club:

Do you think the word "Doctor" has a nice ring to it?  Do physical therapy, nursing, surgery or other medical careers sound interesting to you?  Come to the first meeting of the Medical Careers Club on Wednesday morning at 7:30am in room A310.  Together we'll plan activities like panel discussions, visits to labs and more to learn more about possible careers in the medical field.  Talk to Ms. Liakakos for more information.

World Language Clubs:

Students in Italian, French, Chinese, German, and Spanish clubs:  Come to the field by the cafeteria after school this Thursday for our World Language Department dodgeball competition, fun and food.

Homecoming:

Homecoming Guest Permission Forms are now available on the Dean's web page, as well as in your SST Office. If you are planning to bring a non-Maine South guest, you will need to have the guest permission form filled out and signed by your dean no later than Today, at 3:30 pm. before purchasing your dance tickets. No guest permission form will be accepted in the dean's office after that date. The guest must be currently enrolled in at least 9th grade and no guest will be admitted over the age of 20 years old. Upon entering, Main South, students must present a current Maine South ID and ticket. Their guest must also present a ticket and current photo ID.


Book Club:

4th-Period: A Representative from the Department of Homeland Security & U.S. Customs will be in the CRC to talk about career opportunities.  If you are interested in attending this career information session, please bring in a pass signed by your teacher.

·         Please arrive in the North parking lot at 8:30 pm. You may park your car in the North lot overnight.  Do not park in the jock lot.  Do not bring any large bags, large purses, backpacks, drinks or water bottles.  Small purses/bags will be subject to a search.  Enter the spec gym lobby from the West side.  You will be assigned a bus to ride on, to and from the park, so have your group of friends together when checking in.  You will receive your Great America ticket when you check in.  Your ticket does not include any food or other items you may want to purchase, so you will want to bring money with you.   The park closes at 4 am, we will load the buses and return to Maine South by approximately 5:30 am.  Dress for the weather.   You will want to wear a jacket in case of rain.  The event will not be cancelled for rain.  There will be movies, dancing, and other activities inside the park buildings.

It's everyone's favorite time of year again...it's time for Mr. Hawk!  It's Saturday, May 12th at 6 pm in the auditorium, for one night and one night only, see Junior and Senior males face each other in the competitive fields of talent, question and answer, school spirit, and formal wear.  16 will compete, but only 1 will take home the crown. Tickets are now on sale in the bookstore for $5, with all proceeds going towards our school wide fundraiser.  Seniors, don't worry, it will be done in time for you to go to Grad Night at Great America!  We'll see you there!

*Congratulations to IHSA State Final Badminton qualifiers Anastasia Economy and Edith Kowalic on their 4th place finish at the sectional. 

*Congratulations to the girls soccer team senior night victory over Riverside Brookfield and Coach Crawford's 200th win as a head girls soccer coach.

*Also a big thank you to Coach Downing and his staff for their help and organization of the CSL Girls Track Conference meet last Thursday night. Many complements from the other conference schools on how well the night went. Thank you.

The Oakton Community College representative will be in the CRC Tuesday, 3rd through 5th periods, for the Financial Aid and Verification Workshop for students enrolling at Oakton next year

Students, Maine South will be hosting a Summer Reading "Pop Up Shop" with Barnes& Noble on Friday, May 11th from 7:30 to 3:30 in the Principal's Conference Room.  Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase the summer reading book of their choosing throughout the day.  Students will receive a 20% on all purchases; cash or credit cards only.  If you have any questions, ask your English teacher.

Class of 2018 tickets for this year’s after prom event are on sale today.  After Prom includes an open aired trolley ride from Prom at the Rosemont Convention Center to Navy Pier.  Once at Navy Pier you will board a luxury cruise ship for a magnificent midnight cruise on Lake Michigan with the wonderful Chicago skyline in the background.  On the boat the party will continue with a DJ, Dancing, Food and Friends.

 

For 1 day and 1 day only Tickets will cost $60 - You Must Turn in All Signed Forms and Purchase your Ticket on Friday, April 27th to get this price…Today!

 

Tickets will cost $80 Monday - Thursday (April 30 - May 3rd)

Ticket price will go up to $90 on our final day of sales Friday, May 4th

If you are interested in representing the Senior Class next year as an elected official (President, Vice President, Secretary or Promoter), you MUST attend one of the following information sessions:

We will be discussing the election procedures, handing out the Class Petition packets, and talking about responsibilities and expectations for the next year if you are elected.

AP STUDENTS:

AP Students -- Before taking any AP exam in May you must complete the pre-bubbling portion of the test. Due to the increasing number of students taking AP courses we now need to hold 2 separate AP test Pre-Administration bubbling sessions.  For all freshman and seniors - your session is this coming Wednesday morning. Freshman and senior AP students should report to the cafeteria this Wednesday at 7:30 AM to complete the AP pre-bubbling.  For sophomores and juniors - your session is on the following Wednesday, April 18.  So all sophomore and junior AP students should report to the cafetieria, next Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 AM.

At the state tournament on March 23-25, the Maine South team placed in the state's "Elite Eight."  The team put in a great trial against the eventual state champion, and seniors Christo Fosse and Julia Benbenek were recognized as outstanding attorneys at the state level.

On Saturday, May 12th, Great America is hosting its fifth annual GRAD NIGHT.  Maine South’s senior class is invited!  This is an overnight lock-in from 10 pm to 4 am for high school seniors only.  You will have access to all rides in the park with very short waiting lines since the event is limited to 10,000 seniors (1/4 of the usual attendance on a summer day).  In addition to the Great America rides there will be DJs and outdoor dance areas in the park all night long.  The cost is $55 for transportation to Great America and admission into the park.  You must ride the bus to and from the park.  Tickets are now on sale in the bookstore until today.  The trip is limited to the first 200 seniors that hand in the completed permission form and pay.  Check your email for the information sheet and permission form from Mr. Berendt.  Please email or see Mrs. Deering in A-121 or Mrs. Serrano in A-213 if you have questions.

Congratulations to Brandon Christopher and Tommy Brady on winning the 1600 m Run and 3200 m Run respectively at the CSL Indoor on Friday.  Brian Brown finished 2nd in the 55m High and Low Hurdles and High Jump.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the Girls Track and Field Team on winning the Maine South Indoor Invitational on Friday night. 

 

At the Kane County Mock Trial Tournament on Saturday, the members of the Maine South team put in another strong performance.  Senior Julia Benbenek won her fourth "outstanding attorney" award of the year, and Senior Mary Clare Nagai won recognition as an "outstanding witness" in the tournament.

CONGRATULATIONS

-Congratulations to the thirteen Maine South students who competed last week at the DECA State Competition. Of those thirteen, 9 students earned a Top 10 award in their contest including Dimitri Speron, Noah Fishman, Raj Rambhajan, Natalia Kurowska, David Rygiel, Tom Jeske, Zach Turbett, Ana Gauder, and Emma Nazar. Of those, Dimitri, Noah, Raj and Natalia earned the right to compete at the DECA International Competition in April in Atlanta. Great job DECA State competitors!

-The Illinois High School Art Exhibit was on Sunday the 25th and the students chosen as State Finalists are: Matthew Deitke, Amine Filali, Arden Sasak, and Anna Koziiol who received an Honorable Mention in the category of Design.

-At the Lake County Mock Trial tournament on Saturday, the Maine South team placed fourth out of 18 teams, only three points behind the third place team and eight points from first.

Junior Sarah Quinlivan was awarded "outstanding witness" designation, and Senior Julia Benbenek was again recognized as an outstanding attorney.

Anyone that is trying out for Baseball must be registered online and all of their forms turned into Coach Lorenz before Try-outs on Monday.  Otherwise you will not be able to try-out.

CONGRATULATIONS

The Boys Swim Team finished fifth in a tight sectional race (19 pts. from 2nd) last Saturday breaking four Varsity Boys Swimming Records.

--The 200 yd. Medley Relay of Josej Kubis, Logan Nielson, Alex Ostrowski, & Luke Wagner came in 3rd breaking a 5 year old record with a 1:37.94

--In the 200 IM, Tommy Doubleday came in 5th with a 1:59.73 breaking his earlier record.

--In the 100 yd. Butterfly, Alex Ostrowski & Evan Clauss tied for 3rd with a 52.68 breaking Evan's record set last year.

--In the 100 yd. Breastroke, Logan Nielson took 5th with a 1:00.73 breaking a 15 year old record.

Congratulations to the boys on another great season!

The Girls' Basketball Team rallied to upset the #2 seed, Proviso East, 48-45, to win their 10th Regional Championship in the last 13 years.  Please come out and support your Hawks on Monday night at Maine East High School as they take on Loyola in the Sectional Semifinals.  Tip off is at 7:30.  Thanks for your support!

CONGRATULATIONS

The Maine South Mock Trial team had a busy and successful weekend! On Saturday at the DuPage County tournament, seniors Christo Fosse and Julia Benbenek were bother recognized as outstanding attorneys.  In Bloomington on Monday, the Maine South team came in 4th out of 22 teams and senior Julia Benbenek was the top attorney of the tournament.  Congratulations to Juila, Christo and the entire team for the great work this weekend!  The team next competes in Rolling Meadows on the evening of the 21st.

CONGRATULATIONS

Welcome home to our Special Olympian athletes from the Illinois Winter Games in Galena! Chris Gordon, Nicole Senese, Siobhan Coakley, Matt Dinkel, Kacper Jakubowski, Daniel Piotrowicz and competed in a variety of snowshoe and ski events through the course of 3 days resulting in eleven gold medals, three Silver, and four 4th place finishes. Congrats to all our athletes, and special thanks to our peer coaches Emma Biggins, Kara Cullerton and Sarah King. 

Congratulations to the Maine South chess team for taking 13th place (out of 128 teams) at the IHSA state championship this past weekend.  We also want to congratulate, Jack Curcio, Henry Curcio and Raman Manandhar for winning individual board medals at the state tournament.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Ahne (sophomore) & Jessica (Jesse) Krawitz (senior) for being selected to the All-State Hockey team!  The game is being played tonight at the Edge Ice Area in Bensenville at 6:40pm.

Last Saturday in the CSL Varsity Swim Meet, sophomore Tommy Doubleday broke a 34 year old varsity record in the 200 yrs. Individual Medley, swimming the event in 2:01.07 and medaling in the event. Congratulations!

Maine South has declared Friday, February 2nd Security and School Safety Monitor Appreciation Day!  Please be sure to take some time out today and thank all of our hard-working folks who are the eyes and ears of Maine South.  They are on the front lines day in and day out, standing their post.  They keep our school safe while maintaining a great and respectful relationship with our students and staff.  Which is not an easy task at times!

CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to girl’s gymnastics on their regional win last night!  Each varsity member advances individually on their events and the team advances to the sectional meet which will be Wednesday at Hoffman Estates High School.

VARSITY AND JV GIRLS GYMNASTICS TEAM :Congratulations to the Varsity and JV Girls Gymnastics teams for beating New Trier last night!! Both teams are currently undefeated in conference and last night the Varsity Team set a new team record with a 145.9 score!  Conference meet is this coming Saturday January, 27th at HOME!

SOPHOMORES: Attention all sophomores interested in applying for the Junior Leader program in PE.  An informational meeting will take place today after school in the Field House.  It is not mandatory just a brief meeting to provide some general information about the application process and the junior leader program. 

MODEL UN: Attention all Model UNers!  Lyons Township High School is hosting its annual Model UN conference this February 27th!  You have received a survey from Mrs. Smith regarding the conference, so please check your email to confirm whether or not you will be going! You will have till Friday 1/19 to respond.  Hope to see you at the conference!

JSA: Maine South’s Junior State of America (JSA) chapter will be having its next meeting today after school in A221.  Come to engage in thoughtful political debate and bring your friends. Snacks provided!

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: There will be an informational meeting for anyone interested in joining the girls track & field program on Friday after school (3:15 PM) in C101.  We will discuss the upcoming season which begins next Tuesday.

ASTRONOMY CLUB: The Astronomy Club will have its holiday party meeting today at 3:30 in Room A-306.  Bring your own cool beverage and snacks.

CHEERLEADERS: Congratulations to the Maine South Cheerleaders for amazing performances at last night’s CSL competition at New Trier! Varsity took 3rd place in the large division and JV took 1st place in the junior varsity division.  Great job lady hawks!
