“Creativity involves breaking out of
established patterns in order to
look at things in a different way.”
-Edward de Bono
I take the word "breaking" very literal! The whole process of mosaics is so intriguing to me. Smashing tiles with a hammer, nipping pieces of glass and ceramic, and fitting together all the pieces like a puzzle can keep me captivated for hours on end. This art takes me back to when I was a kid. My family would put together a puzzle during the summer while we were at camp, and I would always hide the last piece so that I could be the last to finish the puzzle. That last piece is still my favorite when it comes to mosaics. That final touch gives me a rush and a sense of accomplishment.
More About the Artist
English teacher is my actual job title. I teach at the same high school in which I attended classes, and I live two houses down from where I grew up. Traditions and patterns hold a special place in my heart, which is why I think I was drawn back home after college and teaching for a few years in the central part of the state. I want my two children to share the same traditions that I grew up with, and part of that involves trips to the beach from which much of my inspiration flows. I also have come to appreciate the craftsmanship of coastal artists and am inspired by the local shops downtown that carry the goods of crafters and artists. I hope the tradition of coastal art will carry through for many years to come.
