Updating the NetBackup for Windows software

Introduction

Once the NetBackup base 6.5.0 client software has been installed, it must be updated to the UMS-ITS current level
, now at level 6.5.5.  This web page describes how to update your software to NetBackup version 6.5.5.

Note: You do not need to update from a previous update level unless there are security or other important fixes from your current version.  

We will attempt to keep you knowledgeable of any required update or security concern via the UMS NetBackup mailing list at http://lists.maine.edu/archives/umsnetbackup.html -- For access to this mailing list, please contact us.  This update, 6.5.5, is a required update.

Note: Do not update past the recommended level described on this page, for it will not be supported with our backup server.

Note: While updates of UNIX/Linux/MacOS may be pushed and automatically installed from the backup server, this "push" function is n0t available on Windows NetBackup clients; that is, you should update your NetBackup client software as described here.

The Download

The NetBackup 6.5.5 client may be installed from DVD, ISO image or downloaded executable.  This web page describes only the downloaded executable situation.  There are three downloads available for the 6.5.5 Windows update (pick the one appropriate for your machine):

Update

Once the file has been downloaded, double-click on it and follow the prompts.  The update should take only a few minutes.  Once the update is complete, the previously empty temporary folder may be discarded.

Special Step for Windows 2008R2 only:

For the 6.5.5 update and Windows 2008 server R2 only, there is an additional, special, update available:
We at UMS-ITS don't believe this is required, as it appears to be concerned with and limited to a problem with "multi-streamed backups", something we use only on very large servers with several large file systems.  We provide it here for worrisome Win2008R2 owners that want to use it.   ;-)

Post-update

If you are updating the NetBackup client software for an existing NetBackup client, you're done.   However, we recommend that you test backup with a small backup, or wait for the overnight automatic backup, and then test a small restore.  Please note that when doing a restore, you will be given a chance to restore your file to a different area, so the production copy of the file will not be disturbed by the restore.   Thank you for updating and testing your UMS NetBackup backup and recovery service!

If this is a new install, start the "VERITAS Backup and Recovery" program and update the list of excluded files and folders, as is appropriate to your situation.  The default for NetBackup for Windows is to backup all files that aren't locked all of the time and might be useful to restore.  Finally, have UMS-ITS complete the configuration  and start the first backup!  Once your first backup has completed, we recommend that you test a small (and large, if you'd like) restore(s).  Please note that when doing a restore, you will be given a chance to restore your file(s) to a different area, so the production copy of the file will not be disturbed by the restore.   Thank you for updating and testing your UMS NetBackup backup and recovery service!
