History of the Run and Slug

A few years ago a small group of us began some short jogs to prepare for the Thanksgiving Day Run in Cincinnati. After running the race together, we continued these regular runs through the winter, usually running a 4 mile loop, beginning and ending at Pediatrics of Florence.

One day after our 4-mile run concluded, we headed to Brickhouse (Shakey's then) for a beer – and our group officially got its “Run and Slug” name. Since that first post-run beer, we have now moved the weekly meeting spot to Shakey’s and complete the loop from there. Our little 4-mile loop has prepared us for several full Marathons, half-marathons and many other 10 and 5K’s.

In 2009, over Memorial Day weekend, we decided to do the loop twice, and the First Annual Run and Slug Memorial Day 13k was born.

The Run and Slug is now a Fundraiser for St. Paul Cross Country.  Every year on Memorial Day weekend, St. Paul Cross Country hosts a race to help the team raise money for their upcoming season.  The race has been FREE for all 11 years, but we do encourage everyone to make a donation to the team.  St. Paul Cross Country thanks everyone for their support and welcomes everyone to come out and run or walk this fun loop through Florence Kentucky.
