Judy Schubert - Squire John Thomas Challenge Teacher

Welcome to my site!

"...failure to help the gifted child is a societal tragedy the extent of which is difficult to measure but which is surely great.  How can we measure the sonata unwritten, the curative drug undiscovered, the absence of political insight?  They are the difference between what we are and what we could be as a society."

-James Gallagher

Welcome to the High Ability Learner Program!  My name is Judy Schubert, and I have been teaching in gifted education for 23 years!
I am the HAL (Challenge) facilitator at Squire John Thomas Elementary. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, a Master’s in Educational Administration and an endorsement in Gifted Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Students I work with qualify for Gifted and Talented services by achieving high scores on standardized tests and by receiving a qualifying score on a SAGES assessment. Students are formally identified at the end of third grade. The 4th and 5th grade HAL students have classes scheduled twice weekly in their areas of strength, either math and/or reading and language arts. Specialized Challenge instruction classes consist of math/language arts lessons that incorporate a Gifted and Talented framework comprised of problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, research, and the Habits of Mind. Students are also involved in two competitions, NewsBrain Challenge and Math Olympiad.  The use of technology is infused into all of the curriculum taught.

My role as HAL Facilitator also includes helping classroom teachers differentiate instruction for their  HAL students. In order to assist teachers with differentiation of instruction and for early identification of high level ability, I also teach Primary Thinking Skills (P.E.T.S.) lessons in the whole classroom from Kdg. through third grade. These lessons develop divergent, convergent, and evaluative thinking skills as well as visual/spatial perception.

Feel free to contact me at anytime with questions.  I look forward to helping your children achieve at their highest potential!
