Greetings College Success (LERN 50) Online Students:

In this class, you will study college success strategies that can help you become a master student and a master in life, at large, if you apply yourself and practice the skills we will cover in this class. This exciting three-credit class satisfies CSU and CCSF Area A and Area E graduation and transfer requirements.

This full-semester class will be available for student access starting August, when the Fall semester begins:

  • 71478  LERN 50 831 8/18/14-12/19/14
  • 72096  LERN 50 832 1/10/14-5/23/14

Look for a welcome letter from me in your CCSF email the week prior to the beginning of the semester. it will contain log-in, orientation options, and other information.

Meanwhile, if you want to get ahead, explore the links on the Useful Resources page. You will find information about how to log-in to Insight, CCSF's online Course Management System; Insight Student Help; the Course Syllabus & Student Learning Outcomes; an Online Self-Readiness Quiz, and more. And check out this link for instructions on how to access the course and log-in on the first day of the semester.

LERN 50 online is entirely online. The orientation and final are online, although I also offer an on-campus orientation especially for those who are new, or insecure about online learning. However, all are encouraged to attend the on-campus orientation; even experienced online learners find it to be beneficial. See ORIENTATION INFO: LERN 50 & LERN 55 for orientation date, time and location. For those who don't attend, the orientation can also be completed online when the course opens.

Online courses are a brilliant option for students with busy lives; or for those who cannot make it to campus; and for those who enjoy independent learning. They offer the opportunity to set your own schedule and cut down on travel time.

A word of caution to those who are new: the work load in an online class is the same as that of face-to-face-classes. The rule of thumb is to put aside the following amount of time weekly for a three-credit class-- whether on-campus or online:

  • 3 hours in class or online X 2 hours of reading, homework and study time for each hour in class.
  •  3  + (3X2) = 9 hours

This  differs depending on the difficulty of the class and your individual pace, but you can use it as a guide when considering your class schedule. Also, remember that the more you put into the class, including practicing the techniques we cover, the more you will gain. You will also be expected to participate several times a week in the discussion forums. This is what takes the place of classroom discussions and where community is built with your instructor and fellow students. Your sincere effort will get you the biggest bang for your bucks, and you will gain the most from your education.

Drop me a line in my CCSF email if you have questions or concerns:

Once you have logged-in and started the course, however, please use the course email, "Garden Wall."

I am here to help you and check my email daily except on weekends. Check in the course several times a week for both email and a weekly newsletter from me to you as well as my responses to student discussion posts.

If I have an emergency and cannot contact you, you will be contacted by the Department of Distance Education which can be reached at cdewar@ccsf.edu

I look forward to working with you, soon.

Greetings Successful Online Learning (LERN 55) Students:

In this six-seven week class, one-credit class, you will go through the simple steps it takes to be a successful online learner, using the CCSF Insight course management system (CMS). Many of the strategies you will practice will also help you become a successful student,  generally, but the emphasis will be on online and independent learning.

Three sections are offered (one early-start and two late-start sections).
  • 73639 LERN 55 8/18/14-10/05/14
  • 73639 LERN 55 10/06/14-12/19.14]
  • 72650 LERN 55 10/06/14-12/19.14]

Look for a welcome letter from me in your CCSF email the week prior to the start of your section. I will remind you about course log-in, orientation options and other information.

LERN 55 online is entirely online except for the mandatory on-campus orientation for new or previously unsuccessful online learners, which covers the two groups of people for which this class--Successful Online Learning-- is primarily intended.
However, all are encouraged to attend the on-campus orientation; even experienced online learners find it to be beneficial. See
ORIENTATION INFO: LERN 50 & LERN 55 for orientation date, time and location. For those who don't attend, the orientation can also be completed online when the course opens.

A word of caution to those who are new: the work load in an online class is the same as that of face-to-face-classes. The rule of thumb is to put aside the following amount of time weekly for a three-credit class. (Note that if it's a six or seven week one-credit class, as opposed to a semester-long one-credit class, treat it like a three- credit class):

  • 3 hours in class or online X 2 hours of reading, homework and study time for each hour in class.
  •  3  + (3X2) = 9 hours

This estimate differs depending on the difficulty of the class. LERN 55 is relatively easy, for example. You just have to commit to set aside the time to complete the work, and take into account your individual pace. But you can use this 9- hour estimate as a guide when considering your class schedule. Also, remember that the more you put into the class, including practicing the techniques we cover, the more you will gain. You will also be expected to participate several times a week in the discussion forums. This is what takes the place of classroom discussions and where community is built with your instructor and fellow students.
