K.A.G. Friends Cultural Challenge 2018-2019

Notes
:

Joan Stephens and Keith Parramore entertained us throughout the year with maths puzzles which everyone has seen, so I have not reproduced them here.

Bob Gibbons submitted songs for the first four months.
I submitted a script for a sketch in December.
Linda Hitchen submitted a short film in February, and Ingeborg Hametner did the same in June.
None of these can be inserted in this page: if you'd like a copy of any, I will forward to you individually on request.

Thanks to all contributors.

November: Food

Family Breakfast

Auntie Irene was a good egg.
She married Jimmy, a rotten tomato,
And went into her shell.

After all, a good egg does not
Spill the beans
On a rotten tomato
Especially when he’s bringing home the bacon.

Number 23

From Guadeloupe to Canteloup
The news out there is loop-the-loop
I never miss a single day
Not listening to what they say
The Falklands War, the Balkans War
The Moon Show to the Goon Show

But I got a sky rocket
We get to ride on it

Chorus
We got the key
We live at number twenty three
And when Sunday comes
We’ll laugh the day away
With a sequence of sequins
Attached to her waist
She will dance for me
Pour champagne on my face

With marble halls and parchment walls
You’d think the rich have got it all
But roaming round designer homes
You’ll hear those rich designees moan
The kitchen’s crap, we need new taps
We’ll have to move to Glasgow

But I got a sky rocket
We get to ride on it...

Chorus

They rush up to the check-in queue
The people check in two by two
Cos there’s a place that they belong
Except when they get there it’s gone
So let’s run home where we’re alone
Hush Puppy and Sex Kitten

‘Cause I got a sky rocket
We get to fly on it...

Chorus

KAG Animals

If you search into the night,
Look a little longer and you might- just might
Catch a glimpse of a very rare breed
Not yet extinct, but quite exceptional
Making their way in dress just right
To the  K.A.G. party tonight!

Always bright and mostly cheery,
Show great enthusiasm, rarely weary
Intelligent they are known to be
Cool calm, and wholesome to the core
Always dressed in the latest attire
Some times known to be quite bizarre

Bears, snakes and reptiles all gathered together
As birds and peacocks quietly preen their feather
Animal chatter resounding throughout
All greeting each other here tonight
Long legged beasties covered in fur
Join lions, tigers and others enjoying a purr.

Each creature  a special sight to behold
No teenagers here, in fact all quite old
Very social creatures are this pack
Yet each one unique in their own special way
A selective diet they prefer to scoff
Although  mostly to be found at the drinking trough

Sometimes dancing though often not,
But fond of music whatever the slot
Classical, and pop are much in favour,
Though Jazz too has a special place
Look again and you might just see
A creature very similar to you and me.

February - Entertainment

I hurry down the dark alleyway. I press the buzzer on the door. It opens and the doorman gives me a broad smile. Oh how I love the world I have just stepped into !
"This is your 15 minute call"
I quickly put on my auburn wig and tie a purple chiffon scarf around it. I put on my shoes, purple courts with 2 inch heels, a quick look in the mirror and Estella a Puerto Rican girl from the West side of New York looks back at me.
I go out into the corridor and do some warm up stretches and kicks , the adrenalin pours through me as I hear the Orchestra warming up over the tannoy. I have loved that sound since I was thirteen years old, that's when it all started.
"Beginners on stage please".
I dash into the dressing room and pick up my first quick change costume and head up the stairs to stage right. Everything is in place. I go onto the stage and take up my opening position. The overture starts . How I love that sound.
I hear the audience excited with anticipation then everything is quiet. My partner smiles across the stage at me, here we go, make it a good one.
The next two and a half hours rush by dancing and singing from one number to another. Rushing up and down the stairs and corridors to do quick changes. Dancing in a frenzy to " I like to be in America "and the fun of " I'm so pretty ".
The show is drawing to it's climax. " West Side" has such a tragic ending. I feel the emotion and shed a few tears not for Tony & Maria but  this is the last night of the run and " West Side Story " is so special.
I wonder who I will be next ?

August - Ideas

In August we invited you, for a change, to list up to five cultural creations of human beings of which you are particularly fond. It must have been a silly idea because nobody submitted a list! Therefore, I'll let you see mine...

 Landmark Trust restorations

The last 15 minutes of ‘Purple Rain’ (the movie)

The design of small wooden boats, especially as seen at low tides

‘Strawberry Fields Forever’

Art Galleries, as typified by the Walker, Liverpool
