Test Availability Exceptions

For various reasons, Instructors may want to change the way tests are available to specific students in the course. The Test Availability Exception feature allows instructors to create exceptions for specific students or groups of students based on:

    • Number of attempts.

    • Time to take the test.

    • Auto submit on or off.

    • Availability of test using start and end dates.

    • Force completion on or off. (Please note: there is currently a KNOWN BUG when using this particular option in the Test Availability Exception feature. If you can avoid using this option, please do so).

Instructions for setting up a Test Availability Exception.

    1. From a test that has been added to a content area of a course, click the Action Link beside the name of the test for which you want to set up exception.

    2. Choose "Edit the Test Options" from the context menu

    1. Scroll down to the Test Availability Exceptions section of the page.

    2. Click "Add User or Group" to specify who will the exceptions will apply to for this test and click "Submit" when finished.

To change any one or all of these options:

      1. Number of attempts: choose Single, Multiple or Unlimited.

      2. Time to take the test: if the "Set Timer" option is already configured for the test, that value will display in the field under "Timer". Enter a new time value and choose whether or not to force the test to auto submit when the time runs out.

      1. Availability of test start and end dates and times: edit the time period the test will be available by clicking the calendar icon and specifying from what date and time the test will available and until what date and time it will be unavailable.

        1. Important Note

        2. If you are providing a test exception for a student because of a previous failed online test attempt:

        3. If the start date you define here is after the Due Date of the test, find the "Due Date" section of the test options below and ensure that "Do not allow students to start the test if the due date has passed" is NOT selected. This will allow the student to take the test outside the original bounds of the test's due date.

      2. When you are finished creating the exception, scroll to the top or bottom of the page and click "Submit".

Note:you can change these settings at any time, even after the test has been attempted by some students. If conflicts in rules occur, the most permissive setting for that user or group of users is granted. For example, students would receive the greatest number of attempts, longest availability time, and so on.
