Course Roles
When MacEwan faculty add other users to their course using the Manage Users tool, they have a choice as to which Blackboard role to give that user in the course. Below are descriptions of the most important Blackboard course roles.
Student
A user with the role of Student has no access to any areas on the Course Management Panel, but does Student has access to all content, communication tools and assessments (unless hidden or restricted by instructor). Only Student users can take assessments and receive grades in the Grade Book.
Guest
Users with the role of Guest have no access to the Course Management Panel. Typically, a Guest can view course materials but NOT tests,assessments and grades. A Guest cannot post to the discussion board.Visitors to the course should be given a Guest role when you want them to see the course materials in Content Areas and Course Announcements, but NOT interact with others in the course or to safe guard student privacy.
Instructor
Users with the Instructors role have access to all areas in the Course Management Panel. This role is generally given to the person developing, teaching or facilitating the class. If a course is unavailable to Students, Instructors may still access it.
Teacher's Assistant
A user with the Teacher's Assistant role has access to nearly everything in the Course Management Panel. If the course is unavailable to students, Teacher's Assistants may still access the course. Unlike the Instructor,the Teacher's Assistant will not be listed in the course catalog listing for the course.
Grader
The Grader role has limited access to the Course Management Panel. A Grader would assist the instructor in the creation, management, delivery, and grading of assessments and surveys. A Grader may also assist the instructor with adding manual entries to the course's grade center. The Grader cannot make changes to content, and does not have access to the course when it is unavailable to students.
Course Builder
The Course Builder role has access to most areas of the Course Management Panel A Course Builder role is primarily intended for someone who will be uploading content. It does NOT have access to the Grade Centre but can still access the course if the course is unavailable to students.
