M-A Wins the Commissioner's Cup...Again!

M-A is proud to receive the Commissioner's Cup award again this year, making this M-A's 7th time winning the award out of the 8 years of the award's existence! The Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the Peninsula Athletic League school that best exemplifies the league's commitment to sportsmanship and excellence in athletics. Points are awarded to each varsity team in each sport that they participate in, by the order of finish in league play. Five sportsmanship bonus points are awarded to schools that complete a season of sport without any player or coach ejections on any of their teams at any level. Schools are penalized one point for each coach or player ejection at any level during the season. It is the Peninsula Athletic League's mission to create an atmosphere of positive competition and sportsmanship between the schools of the PAL.

Congratulations to the whole M-A athletic community on this incredible achievement!

As we all know, budgeting for high school athletics is extremely tight these days. Here's what Co-Athletic Director Paul Snow recently had to say to the San Jose Mercury News about overseeing the athletic budget as one of the athletic director's most important duties:

"It's more of a challenge to manage a budget that provides equally for the needs of all of our teams," Snow said. "It is much more of a challenge for public schools, who don't have nearly enough resources from the district to make ends meet. Almost our entire allocation from the district goes to transportation costs. Everything else, including assistant coach stipends, equipment and uniform replacements have to come from our own fundraising efforts."

Snow credits the M-A Boosters Association for bailing out his athletic program, which gets $40,000 a year from the district.
