School History

The Lunenburg Primary School, consisting of preschool through grade 2, opened in July of 2005. This new building replaced the 'old' Primary School built in 1929 and was located in the center of town. The 'old' Primary School housed preschool and kindergarten students only. A formal dedication and open house was held on October 15, 2005. Third grade was relocated to the Primary School in August 2012 after the Thomas C. Passios School was closed.

The Lunenburg Primary School is a beautifully designed facility, with a full size gymnasium, cafeteria, and glass enclosed media center. It currently (2010-2011) has two preschool classes, five full-day kindergartens, five first grades, and five second grade classes. We offer an Extended Day Program at a nominal rate, designed to provide support to parents both before school, during school for preschool and half day kindergarten children, and after school. In addition to grade level classrooms, our art room, music room, and technology lab provide the most up to date facilities available to students.

During the opening year, the entire student body was included in an art project. Every child and adult designed and painted three tiles which were mounted on the atrium wall forming a rainbow effect. Mrs. Linda Widstrand, local artist and parent, coordinated this project.

The reading corner of the Primary School library was dedicated to Connor Lourens in the spring of 2006. Connor was a first grader here at the Primary School when a tragic accident took his young life. Connor worked hard to become a good reader and loved dinosaurs. We wanted to find a way to keep Connor's memory alive in the Primary School. With the artistic help of a former student and teachers, a dinosaur mural was painted on the wall of the reading corner. We welcome any parents who would like to view Connor's Corner in our school library.

Connor's Corner in library

We are deeply indepted to Nathan DiPerri, whose artistic abilities and efforts helped us attain our goal of completing Connor's Corner for September of 2006. Along with Nathan, our art teacher Lori MacDougall, our music teacher Maribeth Ford, one of our kindergarten teachers Deb Zivojinovic, and tutor Betsy Carbone worked diligently to complete the dinosaur mural. You will notice in the picture above that a dedication plaque hangs along the far wall. A bronze statue of a young boy reading, donated by Nancy and Ron Lourens, sits prominently atop a library bookcase.
