Fuel Up to Play 60 Grant Award 2017-18

Primary School was just awarded its 4th Fuel Up to Play 60 Grant sponsored by the New England Dairy Council for the 2017-18 school year!  Our $1721 award will be used to implement our Recess Refresh Physical Activity Play and Farm to School Healthy Eating Play!  Students have accepted the challenge and have signed the Fuel Up to Play 60 Pledge and promised to eat nutrient-rich foods and exercise for 60 minutes or more everyday!  Mrs. Soltysik and Mrs. Bachand have signed the pledge too!  Funding has been used for taste testing nutrient-rich foods during a community event, cafeteria kitchen equipment including a vegetable dicer, sheet pans, knives, and peelers, and physical activity core skill equipment and station manipulatives.  A big thank you to the New England Dairy Council and the NFL's Play 60 Program for this grant!
As part of this year’s Fuel Up to Play 60 Farm to School Play, in Health we continued to learn about the benefits of eating dairy and other farm-grown foods. Also, thanks to our community partner, Cooper's Hilltop Farm, and the awesome pictures they have provided for our Dairy Farm to School bulletin board, we also learned more about dairy farms. Learning about the work of dairy and other farmers in producing nutritious foods and learning about how farmers take care of the land can help us all better appreciate the many foods farms provide us and where these important foods come from.  We are so lucky to have locally grown, fresh, nutritious and delicious foods from Cooper's Hilltop Farm available to us that we can get right in Leicester! On behalf of the Leicester community I would like to thank Cooper's Hilltop Farm for the work they do to provide this food for us!
Another huge thank you goes to our community partner, Cooper's Hilltop Farm, for the great idea and offering to help us run our first annual Healthy Recipe Contest for students and staff!  Twenty-four students and staff submitted healthy recipes with farm-fresh ingredients (thank you participants!) which will be posted on the Physical Education with Mrs. Woods website as a great healthy-eating resource for Primary School families!  Cooper's Hilltop Farm surprised us at our April Community Meeting by announcing not 2, but 5 healthy recipe contest winners!  Wow!  Cooper's Hilltop Farm generously awarded each of the winning healthy chefs a Cooper's Farm store gift certificate and a gift basket and has offered to help us run another Healthy Recipe Contest next year!  We are so grateful!
