GENERAL LANGUAGE ARTS NOTES
***In 6th grade, students are encouraged to read independently. The school and I have tons of books to choose from or they could grab something outside of school. I encourage you to check in with your kiddo about what they are reading and make sure it aligns with your expectations.
What we're working on this quarter:
For the rest of 3rd quarter, we will move back into a novel study with periods 4, 7, and 8 reading A Long Walk to Water and 5th period reading The Red Pencil. Both of these novels deal with the Sudanese Civil War and students will use those experiences to analyze how one sentence/paragraph/scene impacts the story as a whole.
We will also synthese fiction and nonfiction (articles linked below). Students will compare fictional and nonfiction accounts of similar experiences, learn to read infographics, and continue to work on nofiction comprehension skills.
Third quarter will continue our work around weekly grammar and word part lessons with quizzes once a month.
Homework will continue the same with an expectation of two hours of independent reading a week.
Please continue to support your students and guide them as independent learners by prompting them to bring a charged chromebook to school, making up any work from days missed, and encouraging your student to write emails to their teachers with questions or concerns.
Nonfiction Articles for Third Quarter (more to be added as needed)
Sudan Conflict: A Front Row Seat
"The Plight of Refugees Around the Globe"
"Education is Our Hope"
"MrBeast Just Broke a Charity Record"
Resource for families: Literature Circle Scope and Sequence
**Families may request optional assignments if the planned curriculum offends their religious or person values. Please inform me in writing if you prefer that your students read an alternative selection to a particular literary work, and please offer a reason for your preference. Please see the district’s website for more information: Parents' Rights
We will be following standards based grading in class so we can best assess how each student is progressing toward 6th grade mastery. Please let me know if you have any questions.
