Safe Route To School (SR2S)

Lake Pend Oreille School District #84, with assistance from Idaho Transportation Department and the National Safe Routes to School program, is dedicated to increasing the number of students safely walking and bicycling to school. Our SR2S program receives federal reimbursement for local initiatives that make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing option for kids.

This program is based on five simple concepts (5Es): Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation. We are working toward enabling and encouraging more of our students to walk and bicycle to school. SR2S continues to collaborate with the City of Sandpoint and the City of Kootenai to improve the safety of children walking and bicycling to school. Furthermore, we will facilitate projects and activities that will reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution near LPOSD schools.

International Walk To School Day is celebrated the first Wednesday of October each year. Students and their families are encouraged to walk to school throughout the year as conditions and weather permits. Contact your school to see how you can volunteer to help make W2SD a success for your child!
