NRH2O Band Festival / Incentive Trip

Hi Parents and Students,

Our band trip this year is a Band Festival (performance) and waterpark trip.  Students will get to enjoy the NRH2O water park and near the end of our day both bands will perform 2 songs from our Spring Concert.  Cost of the trip is $21 per student. All payments due by Wednesday May 8. Students attire is band shirts and shorts (over their swimsuits).  To be eligible for this trip, students must be passing all subjects, students must have followed Code-of-Conduct policies (no office referrals, ISS, DAEP) and any other requirements their director required.  

Buses will stop during our trip to have a fast food lunch.  Students will need to bring money for lunch and snacks at the waterpark.  7th Grade Band is scheduled to play at 5:30 pm and 8th Grade Band at 6:00.  We will load buses after our performances and return to Lorena. This looks like a late return of around 9:00 pm.  We will not stop to eat supper on our departure.

The band will be in need of chaperones that will ride the buses with us, be with students at the park throughout our day and make sure students are on time for our performances.  Chaperones are responsible for their meals and park entrance fee ($17). In order to be a chaperone, you must have filled out a criminal background form and have that on file in the admin offices.  Once approved by admin, I will contact you with additional information. If you are interested in assisting us, please email me at halmccarty@lorenaisd.net or send a note with your child saying you’d like to chaperone.  I will be in contact with you.

April Notes

Solos & Ensembles

All Middle School Band students have solos or ensembles or both they are working on to prepare for Riesel Solo & Ensemble Competition on May 3 OR The Lorena Recital on May 7.  The Lorena Recital is an event you can come hear your child perform.  All students who did not participate at Riesel will be assigned times during  4:00 - 6:30 PM on May 7.  This will be held at LMS and performance rooms will be the Cafeteria, Library and Little Band Hall (Choir Room) off the athletic hallway.  It is come and go.  Students should arrive 20 minutes before their scheduled performance and may leave after they have played.  Attire is band shirts and jeans or Sunday best.  Students are welcome to wait in the Band Hall after school on May 7.  Parents may request a 30 minute time slot by emailing me.

Band Spring Concerts

The 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Band Concerts will again be apart of the Fine Arts Festival on Sat May 11.  Times of performances TBA soon.  Attire for students will be band shirts/jeans.   

7th and 8th Grade Trip Approved

The 7th and 8th Grade Band trip has been approved to attend "NRH2O Band Festival" in North Richland Hills (which is in the Ft. Worth area).  Both bands will perform  2 songs from their spring concert and will get to spend time in their water park.  Attire is band shirt/shorts (over their swim suits).  Charter Buses will be taken and Chaperones will be needed.  Look for this information to come out the week of April 22-26.

Final Information for ‘Pride of Texas” Band Trip

March 28, 2019

Hi Parents,

I received new information from Pride of Texas last Friday.  They have changed our time that we perform. We are now scheduled to warm-up at 2:40 pm and perform at 3:00 pm.  Students must wear their band shirt, blue jeans/shorts and tennis shoes. Their Emergency Medical Release form must be turned in.  We will meet in the band hall at 9:30 and depart around 9:45. This will not change a whole lot other than the time we will leave to come home.  After we perform, we will load buses and return to LMS. We should return between 4:00 and 4:15 pm.

We will have 2 full band after school rehearsals on Monday April 1 and Thursday April 4.  Rehearsal will start after school at 3:35 and end at 4:30. Students must make one of the 2 rehearsals but I am asking them to try to make both.  Please be at the school promptly to pick up your children at 4:30 pm in the front.

Friday, April 5, students will meet after second period in the band hall.  Role will be taken and then we will load buses with instruments and binders.  A pizza lunch is provided and if students would like snacks, please include a few extra dollars.

8th Grade Band

Hi Parents,

8th Grade UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest is Thursday MARCH 26.  Student attire is Black/Black with black shoes. Venue is Midway High School (8200 Mars Drive, Waco, TX 76712).  Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.  There is no admission charge to get into the Theatre.   Students will eat lunch at normal time.

             All students must ride the school bus with all other band members to any scheduled performance. However, a student may be checked out early by their parent to return home.  A student may not ride home with another parent unless communication has taken place with a director at least 24 hours ahead of time with both involved parents/guardians and has principal approval.

6th Grade Pride of Texas Trip

Hi Parents,

All eligible 6th Grade band students will travel to Temple Spare Time Texas for our band trip on Friday April 5.  We will perform in the Pride of Texas Band Festival. Students must wear their band shirt, blue jeans/shorts and tennis shoes.  Their Emergency Medical Release form must be turned in. We will meet in the band hall at 9:30 and depart around 9:45. We are scheduled to perform at 4:00 pm in the big tent outside Spare Time.  After we have performed and gone through the clinic portion we will return home sometime around 5:15 pm.

The band will need at least 8 Sixth Grade Parents for chaperoning.  Chaperones will be assigned a group of students to stay with. Specific guidelines will be talked about at our chaperone meeting at 9:30 a.m.  Interested parents may send a note or email me. Chaperones are responsible for the $10 fee to enter spare time and receive a buffet Pizza meal.  If you would like to participate with the students in the games, your fee jumps to $20. Thank you in advance for your help.

Spare Time Texas has 3 things to offer when we drive down to Temple.  Students have unlimited play on bowling, laser tag and the arcade. Pride of Texas makes note that “Premium Games” are not covered.  I’m not sure what that is so we will find out together. Student cost is $28 and a pizza meal is included. Students wanting something different should plan to bring that from home.  The second page and money are due no later than Wednesday March 20.

Welcome Back.  It's 2019.  Can't believe how fast this year is moving.  First let me say, Thank You for all the cards and gifts many of you sent before the holidays.  That was very nice and appreciated. 

As we get back to school, 8th grade band starts work on their UIL music.  We have a tough march and trombones and baritones need to take their horns home and practice.  Expect me to set some after school rehearsals soon.  2 songs will be passed out the first week.  The second song we should be reading through probably by the end of the 2nd or 3rd week.  It's much easier.  Our 3rd and final song is another booger-bear.  We'll need some extra practice on it too.

6th Graders get a new warm-up sheet and some a technique sheet too.  This helps get them ready for 7th grade band.  We will be back in our books and testing each Friday.  Their horns should be home often. 

Please notice a calendar of events is on the left.  I have some updating that will take place, but a lot of it is set.  Mark yours at home and hold on.  I bet this semester is going to fly also. 

6th Grade Full-Band

After-School Rehearsals

All 6th Grade band students will have 2 after-school rehearsals before our Winter Concert.  The days of the rehearsals are Thursday December 13 and Monday  December 17.  Rehearsal times are 3:35 PM - 4:30 PM.  Students must make 1 of the 2 rehearsals and hopefully will make both rehearsals.  Students failing to make an after-school rehearsal will not not be allowed to perform in the concert.  Parents should promptly arrive at 4:30 in the front of the school.

ATSSB All-Region Band Tryouts Info

Hi Parents,

Your child has expressed interest in trying out for ATSSB All Region Band. Region tryouts are Tuesday, December 4th at Robinson Junior High.  Students play scales and 2 etudes and compete against students from other schools in our region. Interested students are coming after school to prepare on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  

We are planning on taking a bus to Robinson on Dec 4. This is a school day and students will miss the majority of their classes that day and responsible for any and all work that they missed.  We will leave around 9:00 a.m. Students will sign-in at 9:30 a.m. and the audition process starts at 10:00 a.m. The clinic/concert is held in Groesbeck on Saturday January 19. We will again provide transportation to this event for our students. Family/friends should be in attendance for the concert that evening. This is quite an honor to make this performing group. This will be an all day event as students learn their concert in the morning and early afternoon and perform early evening. As we get closer I will have more details. Cost to audition is $9.00. Please make all checks payable to LMS Band. This is due no later than Nov 16.

8th Grade Band Night

This Friday, November 2 is 8th Grade Band Night at the football game.  Students should wear their Band Shirt or a black spirit shirt (bring a coat too, it may get chilly).  8th Grade Band members will meet at the High School Band Hall at 5:00 p.m. Students are welcome to wait in the Middle School Band Hall until it’s time to walk over.  Supper and drink will be served. HS & MS bands will march in together at approximately 6:30 pm to the stadium. We will play for the tailgaters and get seated in the stands.  We encourage students to stay the entire evening but students may be picked up any time after half time. I hope this will be a wonderful experience for your child and be the start of a wonderful experience of participating in High School Fine Arts.

All 8th students must have their Emergency Medical Release Form turned in to participate.  I will be contacting parents if students have not gotten this taken care of.

Band Shirt Order Forms are coming next week.  Our 8th graders did a great job picking a new logo for us.  We'll take 2 weeks to get order forms in.  All 6th - 8th grade band students need a new shirt.  Cost of this shirt is $8.95.
