Liberty Partnerships Program
The Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) was established in 1988 under Section 612, Subdivision 6 of the Education Law to address the significant dropout rate among New York's youth.
Longwood High School works in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College to offer a Liberty Partnerships Program which is designed to increase students' motivation and academic preparation so that they can complete their secondary education successfully and enter college or meaningful employment.
LPP high school staff members include LHS teachers, as tutors, a LPP Club Advisor (Pennie Streim), a LPP Teacher Facilitator (Patti Roenbeck), and a LPP Counselor Liaison (Susan Schoen).
Longwood High School offers 9th through 12th grade LPP students the following services:
- Individual and small group tutoring in all Core subjects.
- ACT and SAT test preparation sessions for Critical Reading, Writing, and Math.
- After-school club.
- College Tours.
- Service-learning Activities.
- Paid internship positions at Brookhaven National Lab for students who are 18 years old.
- 'Foundations for College Success' and 'College Seminar' college level courses. Students who complete both these courses earn 1 college credit at SCCC which is a required course at SCCC and may also be accepted as elective credits at other colleges.
- Scholarship opportunities for several colleges.
Criteria for LPP candidates: at-risk students, due to academic or other concerns. Homeless students are always accepted in the program. All services are free to students. Students need to be willing to be involved in more than one program component and need to attend 50% of monthly evening student-parent meetings, and all services, events, and activities during the year.
