Re: Permission Slips

Boston
Good evening. I thought I'd let our parents know that we still have plenty of room for chaperones in our classroom. However, if no more chaperones volunteer, I will be able to work with one of the other fifth-grade teachers and their chaperones, as well, to make small groups for the trip. If you are still interested in being a chaperone, please let me know.

Field Day and Family Steam Night
Just a reminder that I am collecting permission slips for both field day participation (with lunch orders if buying) as well as for students to do a demonstration at Family Steam Night.

Thank you.

Happy Spring! This year is moving too fast. But I am happy to see flowers and green grass again. I hope everyone is doing well. A couple of reminders:

1. Students should return their Boston field trip permission slips no later than the end of this week.

2. Students also came home with a purple form from me regarding Family Steam Night. I am hoping all or most of the students can join me that evening to do short demonstrations of the STEAM learning they are doing in school. In this way, every student will have an opportunity to participate in an extracurricular activity, as well as have an opportunity to walk around and enjoy themselves that evening. I will create a working schedule to make that happen.

3. MCAS for math begins this Tuesday, 5/2 and continues on Wednesday, 5/3. Students should bring a snack, get a good night's rest and take the time to eat breakfast, so they feel comfortable during testing.

Thanks!

Kelly

In addition to the tee-shirt link below (for field day, if needed), a reminder that the PTA is looking for your child's baby picture and favorite Wolf Swamp memory for this year's yearbook. These are both due on Monday, 4/24. I hope everyone is enjoying their vacation!

The field trip was a success. The students did a wonderful job working together in teams. I couldn't be more pleased. Parents, just a reminder, your child should have brought home two forms regarding baby pictures and memories to be submitted for fifth-grade graduation. Please be sure to ask your child for these forms, so they can be completed and submitted by the deadline. Thank you.

Finally, we have our next math quiz on Thursday morning.

Hi Parents,

A permission slip went home today for students to have signed for our field trip on Tuesday. So there's no confusion, the first permission slip was to allow your child to be photographed. Please call with any questions.

Thank you.

Dear Parents:

If you aren't already aware of the dates, students are scheduled to take the English Language Arts state exam starting this Tuesday. A hearty breakfast and a good night's sleep will help them to feel comfortable for the days ahead. Thank you. Kelly

p.s. Just a reminder, too, that the students will be going to Springfield College on 4/11 to complete their leadership skills program. More times and details to follow.

2/26/17

Dear Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing vacation. I enjoyed spending time with my family and made sure to take advantage of the beautiful weather right here in New England!

Student's reading and writing homework will shift one or two days a week from responding to their reading from their independent reading book to now include writing in the content areas (answering questions with the proper detail and evidence to support their answers) based on their reading in the different subject areas.

In addition, students are being given the option of reading an article from DigitalWorks.com and answering the short list of questions for their reading homework if they are unable to complete the task during the day. This will be time they manage on their own (with my support) knowing what it is due and when it is due. I expect questions throughout the week and will be there to help them. Both of these new types of assignments would be their homework for reading and writing, so it would not be considered more homework - just different than what they've been doing and only as needed. Students are given time to do the writing and the article during morning work, when they finish other work in class, and during WIN (for those in the classroom). It is my goal to help them manage their work time during the day to help them become more independent. Therefore, if they are completing this work in class, they should continue to respond to their independent reading for homework by choosing from the various prompts I've given them and within their reader's notebook. Since they are doing the same during Reader's Workshop, I thought the change would be a more productive use of their time. This is information they will be given, as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your support.

Dear Families,

I hope everyone is doing well and not shoveling too much! I'm touching base to let you know that some students plan to give cards out tomorrow, but of course, this is not something any student should feel they have to do. Please email me with any questions. Thank you, as always.

Hi Families,

Our physical education teacher located a pair of black "Karbon" snow pants today out at recess. If your child is missing this item, please let them know to check with Mr. Bradshaw. Thanks! Kelly Batchelor

Dear Families,

Students have run out of their fine expo thin black markers (or they're at home or in backpacks). Please, if you have an opportunity, supply your child with another pack they will keep in their desks. Thank you! Kelly Batchelor

December 5, 2016

Dear Families,

Students are coming home with two documents today in addition to their homework. One is a permission slip for their participation in a leadership program developed by Springfield College, which was awarded through a LEEF grant. The college team will be visiting with us tomorrow as well as another date in the near future. Our students were also invited to participate in this program at the college later in the year, which requires your signature and health information regarding your child. Please review, sign the permission slip and return to me at school.

The other document is from Mr. Bradshaw regarding winter sports and the clothing students will need to bring in to participate considering the winter weather.

As always, I'm here for any questions. Thank you!

December 2, 2016

Dear Families,

Please note that there will be a math quiz tomorrow regarding division of fractions. Our unit test for multiplication and division of fractions will be next Wednesday, December 7th. Students should refer to their student activity books (all lessons from unit 3, i.e., 3.1, 3.2...3.12), their math journal, and the family letter for additional support. They should also be able to determine the correct operation, be able to provide a situational problem that involves fractions and whole numbers, and draw or understand visuals for the test.

Thanks for your support.

10/17/16

Hello Families,

We managed to get quite a lot done in two days. The students are busy finishing their personal narrative writing and took their social studies unit test, too. Our math centers today were engaging and students had a chance to move about the room all the while checking in with their own understanding of what we are learning in our new decimals unit. PLEASE NOTE: Students are coming home today with various informational forms, including picture day forms, the Turkey Trot, and the contest to design a t-shirt. Please take some time to go through the forms before Monday.

Upcoming dates to remember:

Wednesday, 10/19 - Picture Day (Students should have their envelopes ready to go).
Tuesday, 10/25 - 5B Book Fair Visit

Best wishes for another spectacular fall weekend.

10/13/16

Dear Families,

Our students finished their social studies unit and will be taking their test tomorrow. They are ready for it, as they have worked very hard the past two months getting there. Tonight's homework is being revised for them to prepare for their test. Please email me with any questions. Thank you, as always, for your support.

9/30/16

Dear Families,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable week. Please note: I seem to be having a classroom phone problem. If you are trying to reach me by phone, please email me instead or try doing both if I don't respond soon enough. Thank you.

Enjoy the weekend.

Hi Families,

Students are bringing home a form regarding scheduled conference dates. These need to be reviewed, signed, and sent back to confirm your appointment. Most families signed up for their preferred conference during Open House (right by the entrance door). If you didn't, I selected a time and sent that to you.

Thank you.

9/23/16

Dear Families,

It was wonderful to meet many of you at our open house on Thursday. I did not get a chance to talk with everyone and am looking forward to our conferences. I hope you enjoyed the evening.

I also want to let parents know that there will be a math quiz mid week and our Unit 1 math test on Friday, 9/30. Please make sure students are practicing at home by doing their homework. No student should feel the need to do more than 25 minutes of math. If you find that they are working longer than that, please let me know, so we can come up with a better plan.

I will also be giving spelling tests every Friday based on the letter sent home regarding our spelling program, Words Their Way.

Thanks for supporting your students at home.

Best,

Kelly Batchelor

Good morning families,

I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather as much as I am. Just a few things to think about. Please, if you haven't, send in all missing forms today. You should have sent in two separate manila envelopes and a yellow and a blue photo permission form. I am only waiting for a few more before I can send these forms to the office. Also, we love Box Tops. Thank you!

Tomorrow is our family picnic. I hope you can join us.

Have a great day!

Mrs. Batchelor

9/9/2016

Good evening,

I have started a math page and will do my best to add to it as we move along. Right now, I've only copied a link to a web page if students need a reminder on how to recognize equivalent fractions, but I would encourage families to review the terminology in our program, as well. Additionally, students were assigned an assignment within their IXL accounts today and were offered their passwords if they didn't remember them. Another item to bring up is students went above and beyond in their response to reading. For now, a summary paragraph is what I'm looking for so I know how they are thinking about the reading. We are writing all of the time, and they are doing a great job.

Tomorrow morning, the students have a 9:00 am assembly and P.E. is their special.

Thanks for staying in touch.

Mrs. Batchelor

It's been great getting to know all of the students and the students getting to know one another. Parents, please review your child's agenda with them every day to make sure they are completing their daily homework. Just a reminder that students will need to add to the homework the following night if they don't hand it in the day it is due. Thanks for the help.
