Volunteer Opportunities

Longfellow encourages and welcomes family member to become involved with various activities related to the school and the PTA. Families can volunteer to help in classrooms, on field trips, with PTA functions, or with special requests from teachers. We will regularly post current opportunities for Volunteering on the PTA web site and in the PTA newsletter.

In order to volunteer for school functions, the Howard County Public School System would like all family volunteers to take a few minutes to complete a Volunteer Confidentiality form.  You will view a very short power point presentation, and then sign and print the last page.  If you do not have time to do this at home, the school will have printed copies of the slides and the final form there for you to sign. Here are the Current Volunteer Opportunities! Check back often. These are always being updated!

The 1st Grade Team is interested in having parents volunteer during their Language Arts time of 9:00am-11:00am.  Volunteers will work to cover boxes with paper for student' writing projects.  This is something the team would like done ASAP.
Please contact the 1st Grade Team Leader, Ms. Gwinn at:  Danielle_Gwinn@hcpss.org

The library media specialist, Mrs. Jankoski, is looking for volunteers who would be willing to help scan books for the annual inventory in the library.  She is very flexible about when volunteers could come in to school.  Volunteers are welcome any day of the week and at any time during the day.  It would be wonderful if some people could come to school and help on a regular basis.  Media staff will train a volunteer on how to scan the barcode on the books.  Please contact Ms. Jankoski via email at jody_jankoski@gmail.com

The Reading Committee is looking for parent volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Book Drive. Volunteers are needed on Monday, June 5th from 9:00am -3:10 pm.  Volunteers could come for an hour, a few hours, or the entire day.  They will be helping students to select books.  If you are able to assist, please email Catherine Smith, the reading specialist, at catherine_smith@hcpss.org

Mr. Yoo, a second grade teacher, is requesting book bins for his students.  He needs this for differentiation of materials for students, as well as organization.  He will be using these in future years, as well.  Mr. Yoo is requesting financial support to acquire the book bins.  You can learn more about his project on the Donors Choose website.  For your convenience, the link is provided so you can copy it in your browser, read more and make a donation, if possible.  https://www.donorschoose.org/project/book-bins/2288875/?challengeid=20827464

The LOES PTA and Reading Committee are looking for parent volunteers to help run our new Henry’s Bookstore.  Henry’s Bookstore will allow students to choose books of their own interest weekly and build their libraries at home for the low cost of $2.00 per book.  We are looking for four volunteers to come once a week. Two volunteers are needed in the morning (8:35am-9:20am) to collect money and create a list of students who have purchased books for the week. Two additional volunteers are needed during the lunch shifts (10:55-1:50) to assist children in picking out books. Currently, there is one volunteer per shift, which is appreciated.  It would be helpful to have two per shift.  This bookstore can only be possible with weekly parent support. We are excited to to increase our students’ love of reading, thanks to the support of our PTA!  If interested in volunteering, please email the Reading Committee at catherine_smith@hcpss.org with the days of the week and times you are available.

**You can always meet your child for lunch! Show up any day! Just sign in at the office first.**
