Dance Team Information 2015-2016
Lockwood Dance Team is a bully-free, harassment-free, drama-free team. Anyone found to be doing these things will be removed from the team and appropriate school measures will be followed (see your handbook). We are here to HAVE FUN and learn. That is all. If you’re looking for drama, look somewhere else! If you can not be supportive of others while they learn, this is not the team for you :)
Dance is a sport at Lockwood and follows all sports expectations and rules:
You must have a current sports physical, insurance card, and concussion form (initialed and signed by BOTH a parent and the dancer) on file.
You must pay the sport fee of $40.
You must have passing grades in all of your classes to perform at games.
You must have 10 practices BEFORE you can perform. Open gyms will count toward your practices if you are there for the entire practice.
As with any sport, proper attire is required.
Practice clothing must be comfortable to move in and meet with the school dress code. When in doubt, wear your PE uniform. If you have to ask, it’s not appropriate.
YOU MUST HAVE PROPER SHOES TO DANCE IN! Tennis shoes, jazz shoes, or dance paws are acceptable. We will wear tennis shoes for performances. Bare feet, socks, boots or other shoes are NOT OKAY. If you don’t have the proper shoes, you will sit out practice and it will not count toward the 10 mandatory practices needed to perform at the first game. Once the official season starts, if you hve to sit out due to inappropriate clothing/shoes, it will count as an unexcused absence.
Dancers dancing at other studios should give me their dance schedules at the beginning of the season so I can try to accommodate them if possible with my schedule.
If you are at school, I assume you will be at dance practice unless I have a note from a parent IN ADVANCE. If you are in school but miss practice for any reason that isn’t pre-arranged, it will be unexcused. Three unexcused absences mean you are removed from the team. (See your handbook.)
I will post some of the choreography on my school web site, but not all of it will be there. It is your responsibility to learn the dances from other dancers if you miss a practice where choreography or cheers is taught. If you are not up to date on the choreography for the dance, you will not be allowed to perform at the game next game.
We will have Open Gyms on the following dates. They are not required, but we will be learning choreography. Two of those practices are during the Christmas break. All Open Gyms will be in the middle school gym.
OPEN GYM DATES:
11/11 from 2:15-3:30, 11/18 from 2:15-3:30, 12/2 from 2:15-3:30, 12/19 from 2:15, 3:30, 12/29 from 9-10:30, 12/30 from 9:00-10:30. There is no practice on 12/9.
A regular season practice and dance schedule with the location of practices will be given to you when I have it. Mr. Swanke is still working out schedules and locations. I do know that our first official practice, which will be mandatory, will be on Monday, January 4. We will have practices all of that week and the next week to be ready for our first performance which I THINK will be January 19, but again, that isn’t certain yet.
We will have at least one guest choreographer, and she will only be able to come a couple of times to teach an entire dance. Those practices will be mandatory if you want to perform in that dance.
Parents and dancers: Please sign up for “Remind” texts from me. I’ll send out reminders of date/time/place of practices. This works with any cell phone. Text @mrslagge to 81010
Parents and dancers, please sign below, indicating that you have gone over these expectations and understand the consequences. If you have any questions, you can reach me at the Lockwood Middle School or at email@example.com.
Unfortunately we have been unable to upload the dance video to this site. I am going to attach the music so that you can practice what you remember. Keep in mind that the beginning (where you run onto the gym floor) is a little different than what you'll hear in this version, but the dance part is still the same.
I'm also attaching a video of "Cotton Eye Joe". Teach yourself the moves they do. We will be changing it a bit, but this will give you a start. We will probably add some hip hop into the middle. (That's right! Hip hop! Because we're cool, like that!)
Happy New Year. See you back at school on Thursday!
