What you need to know for 6th grade PE:
Students are strongly recommended to wear clothing and shoes that will enable them to safely and comfortably perform the activities, sports, and workouts in. Proper, comfortable shoes will need to be worn for the students to complete the activities in an efficient manner. Students are encouraged to bring a pair of athletic type shoes in their backpacks for PE class if they are wearing boots or sandals to school.
This year, our 6th grade PE activities will be pre-athletic based. The students will focus on skill performance and improvement, while incorporating fun, teamwork and sportsmanship into each unit.
We will begin the year with a general stretch and exercise routine, and the students will learn Agilities. These include high-knees, butt-kicks, bounding, Russians, A skips, slides, etc. These are exercises designed to improve coordination, and flexibility, and to prepare the joints and muscles for activity/workouts.
Our first sport will be volleyball. We will do an extensive 4-5 week unit working on passing, setting, spiking, and serving. The students will be in teams of 6 to perform team-based activities and drills. The idea is to introduce concepts, drills and skills that will transfer to the 7th grade volleyball program.
We will do a 3 week football unit, with emphasis on the skills of passing, punting, and tee kicking. It should be noted that NO contact sports will be performed due to student safety and well-being. The students will learn these 3 basic skills, and participate in a Punt, Pass, and Kick competition with other classmates.
Our final comprehensive unit of the first semester will be an extensive 4 week basketball unit which will include shooting mechanics, dribbling, passing, and team-based activities. It is designed to prepare the students for 7th grade basketball. The students will be introduced to, and perform drills that the athletics teams practice for basketball season.
During the Spring semester, our units will include Tennis (3 weeks), and a 4-5 week Track and Field unit in which we will time the students in several events, including the Mile run, 800m run, 400m dash, 200m dash, 100m dash, and the MIle Relay. The students will also learn and perform long jump, hurdles, and Shot Put. We will also spend some time reviewing some of the earlier units, and skills.
