The Wind Ensemble is our varsity group. It is open to students in grades 9-12, by audition only. This ensemble represents the most outstanding instrumental musicians in Lockhart High School, and will focus on the preparation and performance of the finest literature for the modern wind band. While students already possess a high degree of ability, the further advancement of musical skills, both individual and ensemble will be paramount to the success of the student and the ensemble. The majority of the music played in Wind Ensemble is individual parts; one or two on a part. Therefore, great emphasis is placed on individual musical responsibility. Students in this ensemble will perform several concerts as well as UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest. There will be required out-of-school time for rehearsals and performances.
The Symphonic Band is our non-varsity group. It is open to students in grades 9-12, by audition only. This ensemble concentrates on the further development of individual and ensemble playing skills with emphasis on the performance aspects of wind band music and the preparation and performance of the finest literature. Students in this ensemble will perform several concerts as well as UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest. There will be required out-of-school time for rehearsals and performances.
Participation is volunteer and rehearsals are after school hours. The Jazz Ensemble is an excellent opportunity to learn about a true American art form---Jazz. Instrumentation includes: Saxophones; Trombones; Trumpets and a Rhythm Section (piano, bass, guitar, and drum set). Students will learn basic jazz fundamentals, different jazz styles such as swing, ballad, funk, and bebop; and improvisation. This ensemble performs at regularly scheduled Band Concerts and occasionally at Jazz Festivals.
MARCHING BAND The Lockhart High School Marching Band is the most visible organization of the LISD music programs. In the fall, the marching band is our varsity group. Students prepare music and coordinate it with motion to form a competitive marching show. The marching band performs at all home and away varsity football games, pep rallies, UIL Contests, performances for school events, and other music contests and festivals. All band students in grades 9-12 are expected to participate in the Marching Band.
Throughout the year, percussion students have opportunities to perform in ensembles of various percussion instruments. The music is composed/arranged specifically for percussion. Additionally, the “indoor drumline” is a select group of students that compete in an indoor setting of marching percussion as well as concert percussion instruments. The indoor drumline is by audition only.
This group performs as an auxiliary unit to the marching band during marching season and a winter guard the rest of the year. There is a specific class for Color Guard separate from marching band. Entrance into this organization is through tryouts in the spring.
