Welcome to First Grade!
This is a classroom where amazing things will happen. Children will learn how to read, write, become independent learners, and good citizens. All of the growth that happens in first grade will amaze you. This is the reason I love teaching first grade!
I believe in meeting each students individual needs. All students learn at their own pace and should be challenged. With challenges many times comes frustrations and I will help guide students through these with dignity while teaching problem solving.
This is my eleventh year teaching first grade in Nipomo and my seventh year here at Dorothea Lange Elementary. I work closely with my team to put students in flexible, ability leveled groups for Language Arts. Also I believe that students learn to read through lots of practice at their instructional level. My first graders will be bringing home Guided Reading books throughout the year at this level. Our class has a lot of fun learning about the world around us through thematic units that incorporate our science, social science, math, and language arts curriculum. Some of our units will be: the seasons, nocturnal animals, past and present, winter holidays around the world, habitats, American symbols, plants, weather, the seven continents and oceans. I hope you enjoy hearing all about these things because surely your child will be full of fun facts that they will want to share with you.
I'm not only a teacher but a parent myself! I have an 8 year old daughter and a 5 year old son. So, like many of you I understand how busy family life can be. I will try to make every effort to return voice mails, emails, and notes in a timely manner.
