  1. Update on School Board Election/Drawing of lots: Declarations of Candidacy were due January 2, 2019 for two open seats, one for a term of 3 years (2019-22), and one for a term of one year (2019-20). The candidate with the higher vote total will hold office for three years. Lots were drawn on January 4th for name order placement on the Spring election ballot (April 2, 2019), for the following three candidates who submitted Declarations of Candidacy papers: David L. Peterson, Sarah Beahm, and Isaac Zimmermann.

  2. First Reading: Open Enrollment, Policy #423- Revision
The regular open enrollment application period for the 2019-20 school year is from February 4 through April 30 this year. An “alternative” application procedure allows pupils to apply for open enrollment (for the current school year) at any time during a school year if certain criteria are met.

For the first reading, the proposed policy change is due to clarification of state law. Before this change, if the school board limited the number of spaces for regular open enrollment in either regular or special education in January, the district could not approve any applications during the year outside of the open enrollment period (alternative open enrollment). With the rule now in place for clarification, boards may now approve an alternative application submitted after the January school board meeting for a current school year if the board did not limit the number of spaces available in the pupil’s succeeding grade or special education service for applications submitted under the regular application procedure for the following school year.

Policy 423 Open Enrollment

Rule to go with Policy 423

We will be bringing recommendations for available spaces to the next meeting on January 28.

  1. WASB (WI Association of School Boards, Inc.) Resolutions:  The 2019 WASB Delegate Assembly meets January 23, 2019 at the state convention to vote on recommended resolutions. Those resolutions were introduced at our last Board meeting on December 17.  Board member Leon Biesterveld and I met and we recommend adopting all the resolutions except for two, 19-04 (Community Schools) and 19-12 (Indigenous People’s Day), as indicated at the link.

Action Sought: Approve the proposed 2019 WASB Resolutions as presented in the Report to the Membership, except as noted above. (19-04 and 19-12).

  2. Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding: Vice President Peerenboom will provide an update that he received at the most recent CESA meeting about the recommendations of this commission. The commission was charged with examining how tax dollars are distributed to schools and making recommendations to better meet the needs of students in the state. You can find a copy of the report at this link.

  1. WI Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week January 14 - January 18, 2019: During this week please join us in recognizing the contributions our district’s crossing guards make in the lives of our students. Annually, the district office personally delivers a special gift to honor Little Chute Crossing Guards for the critical role they play in providing safe passage for our students as they travel to and from school.
