Family And Community Education Service

Community Learning

Community learning includes a broad range of local learning opportunities that brings together adults (of different ages and backgrounds) and helps them to pursue an interest, address a need, gain a new skill, become healthier or learn how to support their children.

The Community Learning team has a commissioning framework of local suppliers that deliver adult learning programmes in key community settings across Sheffield. These programmes fall into one of 4 categories:

·         English / Maths

·         Digital

·         English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and

·         Learning for Personal wellbeing and entry into Employment

Our classes are primarily non-accredited but do include many that lead to a nationally recognised qualification.  Learners can enrol on any course even if they haven’t studied before.

There is a small charge to attend these classes however English and maths are free.  Classes are free for those Learners on means tested benefits.

Family Learning

 our pinterest page

Family Learning provides opportunities for parents/carers to find out how to help their children learn and develop.  We also provide a route back into education for those adults who want to improve their own skills.  Our focus is on improving English, maths, digital skills and health and wellbeing for families across the city.

By finding out how their children are learning in nursery or school, Family Learning enables parents/carers to support this learning at home.  We use exciting resources and activities which make learning fun.   Evidence shows that when parents/carers are involved in their children’s education, children achieve more.

Family Learning is free to learners and to settings.  Our team of expert, qualified tutors deliver a range of courses (from 2 to 30 hours) in schools, family centres and community settings.  For those wishing to progress further, we offer qualification courses and routes into further/higher education, volunteering and employment.
