Today even the citizen scientist can receive a lot of support for identifying species in remote areas such as where we work, in Sofala Province, Mozambique. This is a great step forward for conservation and international awareness, because it is now possible to emphasize the biodiversity of our area, so people all over the world can appreciate the natural heritage the Mutondo communities are trying to preserve.

We use iNaturalist as our digital platform and have had a good deal of success identifying the majority of what we record digitally in the Mutondo communities and on Catapú. Recent biodiversity surveys conducted by members of the Living Forests Endeavour for Sofala project and naturalists have uncovered rarities such as the Saturniidae moth, which was photographed for the first time in Mozambique in November, 2014.
