Learning Bits: Dell Service Tags

posted Jan 6, 2012, 5:39 AM by Chris Decker
What is a Service Tag?
A Service Tag is an identifier that is applied to every computer manufactured by Dell.
The Service Tag is a unique five to seven digit alphanumeric (letter and number) code, which is found on a white bar-code label affixed to your Dell computer or peripheral, usually on the back or side panel. Please see attached images for examples of a Laptop Service Tag and a Desktop Service Tag.

Why are Service Tags Important?

Entering the service tag of your Dell computer or peripheral on work orders helps us identify computers, track issues and more effectively deliver solutions.
Some examples of information that can be obtained with a Service Tag include the type of warranty coverage, warranty period, options for extending warranties, transferring ownership, a means for identifying repair parts and consumables, and a detailed description of the original system configuration that includes the hardware and operating system installed when the system was built by Dell.

Please help us assist you by always providing the service tag, if applicable, on your technology work orders.
