posted Mar 29, 2017, 6:30 AM by Kendrick Wong

Sunday April 2, 2017 11 AM to 3 PM
Markham Event Centre
95 Duffield Drive, Markham

York Regional Police is a proud partner in a region that celebrates its rich cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity within a regional municipality where residents trace their ancestries to virtually all corners of the world.  Within this microcosm of the world, York Regional Police has, for the past 14 years, commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in partnership with our multicultural community in celebration of our diversity while collectively re-affirming our commitment to the eradication of racial discrimination. Our communities have always responded with overwhelming support as these events have showcased a diverse mosaic of food, culture, art, and entertainment.

Through our continued collaborations with our communities, we hope to one day to see the permanent eradication of racism, prejudice and hatred in all of its ugly manifestations, as we collectively strive to build community resilience, social cohesion, and peaceful co-existence in communities that personify the principles of human rights and social justice through expressions of courtesy, dignity, respect, and equality for all people each and every day.

As we prepare for this year’s event themed “Diversity Includes Me”, we would be honoured to have you join us at our event on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Markham Event Centre located at 95 Duffield Dr, Markham, Ontario. Please feel free to extend this invitation to family and friends. Admission is free and all are welcome!

Markham Issues Heat Warning for August 4 and 5

posted Aug 4, 2016, 4:51 PM by Kendrick Wong   [ updated Aug 4, 2016, 4:55 PM ]

Markham has issued a heat warning due to the local forecast indicating temperatures above 30 Celsius with a high humidex on Thursday, August 4 and Friday, August 5, 2016. It is important to take precautions to avoid suffering heat-related illnesses.

Local Forecast

Thursday, August 4
Sunny. High 31. Humidex 38.
Night - Clear. Low 21.

Friday, August 5
A mix of sun and cloud with 40 percent chance of showers. High 31.
Night - Cloudy periods with 40 percent chance of showers. Low 17.

Markham recommends the following based on Health Canada guidelines:

  • Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, to decrease your risk of dehydration.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric.
  • Keep people and pets in your care out of parked vehicles and direct sunlight.
  • Spend a few hours in a cool place - a tree-shaded area, swimming facility or an air-conditioned building such as a shopping mall, grocery store, place of worship or public library.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Prepare meals that don't need to be cooked in your oven.
  • Block sunlight by opening awnings, and closing curtains and blinds during the day.
  • Avoid sun exposure - shade yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or using an umbrella.
  • If you are taking medication or have an existing health condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist if heat exposure increases your health risk and follow their advice.
  • If you have an air conditioner with a thermostat, keep it set to somewhere between 22ºC (72ºF) and 26ºC (79ºF), which will reduce your energy costs and provide you with needed relief.
  • If you have a window air conditioner, cool only one room where you can go for heat relief.
  • Frequently visit friends, neighbours, and elderly family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure they are cool and hydrated.
  • Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.

Welcome back, Summer! This year’s LCRA Summer Festival will be on Sunday, June 12, 2016, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Legacy Park. Summer Festival is the largest annual event the LCRA organizes for its members. Come join us for a fun afternoon of games, entertainment and food! Non-members are also welcome and can purchase tickets at the event.

Please be sure to renew your LCRA membership in advance to avoid long line-up at the membership table. All 2016 LCRA members who register and make payment by 12:00 noon on Friday June 10, 2016 will be included in a prize raffle, including gift cards ($100 and $50) and summer basketball camps (valued $169 each) donated by New Horizon Basketball Academy.

We desperately need volunteers to help run this event, so please contact events@legacynet.ca if you can help.
